Standards New Zealand online

(From Dawn’s email to Engineering LLOs late last week)

The Library has subscribed to the Standards NZ Online Library. This will replace our standing order for print Standards and includes all New Zealand Standards as well as combined NZ and Australian Standards. It does not include Australian Standards subsequently adopted by New Zealand.

The Standards NZ Online Library is now accessible via the Library’s Databases page.

The Library has a responsibility to make users aware of the rules:

  • Users are able to download any document for viewing, but the retention of printed documents is expressly forbidden
  • Users are able to print one copy for their own internal purposes but cannot print en masse in order to build up a hardcopy reference collection (defined as being more than 10% of the number of documents in the subscription package
  • Users must destroy any printouts at the end of the course of study, or after 12 months maximum
  • Any printed copies must be destroyed if our subscription is cancelled
  • Standards cannot be circulated or passed on in any shape or form to a third party

Please read the Terms and Conditions in full so that you are fully aware of the license restrictions. The Library accepts that it is not reasonably practicable for us to monitor each and every use/download associated with this online library, though we would intervene in the case of a suspected breach of the conditions. We also rely on the professional judgement and expertise of anyone using the online library.

As we now have a substantial portion of our Standards Collection available electronically, we are also reviewing the borrowing conditions attached to the remainder of the print collection. Historically, items held in our Standards Collection have been treated as reference items, for use in the Library only. However, we realise that they are an essential working tool and often need to be consulted in a laboratory or elsewhere. It is likely that we will set up a trial so that these Standards will become borrowable for a maximum of three hours. We will monitor the trial and should any problems occur, we may review the borrowing status.
