..”Our concern relates to student knowledge and use of the library resource. The
librarians are of the view that opportunities to learn how to use library resources are
given to students in only a few departments.
To assist students, the Library staff have developed an Information Literacy
Programme where Information Literacy is defined as “the ability to locate, evaluate,
manage and use information from a range of sources for problem solving, decision
making and research.” These skills are exactly those encompassed by bullet points 4,5
and 8 of the graduate profile (Appendix B).
The Panel agrees with Library staff who suggested to us that departments should give
some priority to including the Information Literacy Programme within their courses. A
laboratory afternoon may be an appropriate time for many departments. We commend
those departments, particularly Chemistry and Geological Sciences that presently
embrace this programme”
