Postgrad forum

There is a project initiated by UCTL to improve the coordination of services to postgraduate students. I am involved in the discussions and there is a desire to have “induction sessions” for Masters and PhD stduents in February in which the library will have its slot. Details are sketchy as yet but for the next meeting Keith Comer (project leader from UCTL) wants “any data about queries from postgrads” related to library matters. He wants to find out what postgraduate students need. I can, of course compile a list, but I would be interested to hear from other library staff too.

  1. Having just met with a postgrad new to NZ I think one thing many such postgrads may need is what many of our undergrads require – especially those with English as a 2nd language – explanations of our jargon and basic library rules – from RLC to ‘requests’. And EndNote info, which many seem to know about but not have used. Perhaps at postgrad level they might be a bit embarrassed to ask for some of the ‘basics’.

  2. They need to understand to double check the availability of full text articles. They may find an article via Google and assume that they cannot get hold of it. They should always check via the journal entry in our catalogue
