SOWK 102 students have a library assignment due on Friday 14th of March. They are attending a library workshop today to help them with this. I am also more than happy to assist these students, so feel free to pass the enquiry on to me. If I am not available, below are some suggestions:

They are required to select one of the following areas and find sources of information to help them identify the issues or challenges facing Social Workers working in one of these areas.
• Child Protection
• Mental Health
• Criminal Justice
• Elderly

They need to find 3 books. There are a range of books in the HV section of 3 day loan which are useful. Most of the introductory texts have sections on the different fields of practice e.g. :

New Zealand Social Work: Contexts & Practice
Social Work: Fields of Practice
The Road to Social Work and Human Service Practice
What Social Workers Do

Also try keyword searches (e.g. child protection social work* or child protection social service* etc.).

They are also required to find one New Zealand journal article and one article published in an international journal. Use Index New Zealand to find the New Zealand article and Social Services Abstracts to find the international one. The key New Zealand journals are: Social Policy Journal of New Zealand, Social Work Review, Te Awatea Review and Social Work Now
