Royal Society membership

There will soon be an influx of Royal Society (Canterbury Branch) members coming to the Central Library to renew or begin their free external borrower membership. A wee problem this year. A batch of ‘Subscription receipt and membership status’ letters was sent out with last year’s details i.e. 2007/8 Subscription with an expiry date of 30 April 2008. Each member should by now have been sent a second corrected receipt.
Please look carefully at the dates on their letters before you fill in the green form and make sure it is 2008/9. And yes, they all need to purchase a new card each year.

Theses

When you get an enquiry about a thesis, please check the catalogue with the borrower. If it is a PhD thesis there should be two copies, one of which is on the open shelves and borrowable. For a Masters thesis, there is only one copy which is available via the Special Collections reading room. Please ask the person to place a Horizon request on it – do not send them straight to the Special Collections reading room as it is unlikely that there there will be staff avaiblabe for on-the-spot retrievals. Requests are checked and retrieved twice a day. Also note that a thesis from the last two years will also be in Digital Library – there is a link directly to the digital copy on the library record, which users sometimes overlook. Visitors are welcome to use theses, but obviously cannot make requests. Please ring Robin Stevens on 8734 with the details of the thesis required. Bronwyn is away until 28 April.
