Discussion: AskLive

Just for fun, I thought I’d start a discussion post about AskLive for anyone who wants to join in and talk about, say: What’s your favourite thing about AskLive? or, What’s your favourite tip for making it work well? or anything else your want to share/get off your chest. 🙂

My tip: if you want to add body language then at the very start of a new message type in /me does something. For example, /me nods shows up as

  • uclib_Deborah nods

(This works in a lot of other chatting services too, eg a friend told me about it in IRC and then I discovered it works on Skype as well.)

(And if anyone’s keen on the professional reading thing, I’ve got a few articles on my scratch drive at Q:\Deborah\Virtual reference, at least until they get deleted. The user satisfaction one is particularly interesting.)

  1. I’m fairly happy with it (although I had so few questions on the old RAKIM version I find it hard to compare). I’m now used to typing shorter answers to avoid the character limit glitch, although I get caught a bit with the msg delays and sometimes answer at the same time as the other person is following up, or vice versa.

  2. I'm (I am) trying to get into the habit of avoiding contracted words as I find it difficult to read comments when an apostrophe has been replaced by a sequence of characters. It’s a pity to have to cut out contractions though as that makes our communication sound more formal.
