Is anyone aware of casual internet cafes that are near University?
I see this one isn’t too far away but wonder what else is available, and why there’s still no casual use kiosk in this place for 10-15 min quick use.

When I was help desk co-ordinator (many moons ago) I tried very hard to get some sort of casual use kiosk set up at the University, but to no avail. ICTS don’t see it as their role, especially as the vast majority of people on campus have access via their login.

I have a feeling I saw one in the shopping centre opposite Bush Inn a while ago (I think in the strip with the restaurants, around the centre of this map: http://icanhaz.com/ecafe). I couldn’t swear to it though.
One on campus would be really useful for visitors, especially during conferences.
Fendalton Library is pretty close.
Accounts for visitors would probably be easiest with appropriate protocols for using and monitoring usage. Probably also good P.R.
I am sure Deborah is correct about there being an internet cafe at the Chruch Corner shopping centre.

Popped into Church Corner just before as this has been bugging me on and off for a few years. There is indeed a place, called "J2 Services", in the "West Plaza Shopping" mall part of Church Corner Mall, 394 Riccarton Rd (quite near Mitre 10). Opening hours 12pm-10pm. Advertised services include video chat/skype/high speed etc. Approx 20 min walk from James Hight. I guess the cost/benefit of offering such a service wouldn’t appeal to management, but this crops up often enough for it to be a bit embarrassing to tell folk we can’t offer such a service. It’s a reasonable expectation of a modern library. Perhaps we could have a nice map on our website instead showing the location of the above anyway? Tim S.
Thanks for the info Tim.
I agree that it’s embarrassing to be sending people several blocks away so they can check their e-mail. I wonder what other Uni. service desks get asked about this, or maybe there is an impression out there in the Uni. community that the library does actually offer such a service.
