An important feature of Historical Abstracts no longer seems to work on the upgraded Ebsco interface: historical periods. So far I’ve completely failed to get any results using this feature, though I do get results if I don’t use it. Obviously it is very useful for history research – no other database that I’m familiar with has it. It should allow you to enter a historical date range to limit a search to a century or decade.
The HistAbs-specific help page that was there yesterday seems to have gone – the only help pages I can see now are generic to all Ebsco databases. I couldn’t find any help about historical periods, admittedly after only a quick look, but that’s all I’ve got time for at the moment.
The really frustrating thing for me is that I had just finished revising the script/handout for a history tutorial for next week, making extensive use of HistAbs and the historical periods feature.
Anyone else want to comment on the technical problems that keep arising from these incessant database upgrades? …eg. the difficulties of trying to see how you’re supposed to refine or modify a search when the language has changed and you can’t see it?
Feel like having a good whinge? I know I do…
The problem of limiting by historical period has been reported and will be fixed asap.
The HistAbs-specific help page can be found in the Help file – at the bottom of the left panel under “Database Help”
