A couple of things discovered while working with a student this evening:
If a Mac user is having trouble downloading references, first check their browser. Safari doesn’t recognise Endnote files as ‘safe’ so won’t open them automatically. Users will need to:
- note the name of the file which will have saved to their Downloads folder;
- in Endnote, go to File > Import;
- select the correct file in the Downloads folder;
- change ‘import options’ to RIS-filter.enf;
- click “Import”.
In Firefox the user needs to tell the browser to open the file with Endnote, and check the “do this every time” box. If this doesn’t fix it then:
- in Firefox go into Preferences > Applications;
- search for “CGI file”;
- set it to “Use other…” and find Endnote in the list of applications;
- search for “RIS file”;
- set that to “Use other…” > Endnote as well.
If the user has Endnote X1 and Word 2008, they need to follow instructions here to get the two working together. I haven’t tested this myself but if the Library gives me a license for Word 2008 on my Mac I will. 🙂
Edited to add – the student reports back that the patch linked from these instructions seems to be US-only and doesn’t work on his NZ Mac. Does anyone have Endnote X1 and Word 2008 and can play with this to work out an alternative solution?

Just wondering if it would be worth making a Mac users FAQ page on the EndNote pages on the Library website? These hints could be a starting point. If I set something up, Deborah, would you (and perhaps Kathryn?) be able to add things to it as you discover them? I know Library IT would find such a page very useful, and it would easily translated into a wiki for EndNote as soon as we can get one set up.

That sounds like a good idea. I’ve wondered if the EndNote pages would work as a LibGuide, but a wiki would make sense too.
