National Librarians of Australia and NZ – Visit to Karaweko Marae

 Karaweko

On Thursday 27th November Nekerangi Paul and Ariana Tikao were involved with a marae visit by the National Librarians of Australia and New Zealand. It was a beautiful day in Akaroa when the manuhiri arrived to Onuku (10 mins from Akaroa). Nekerangi spoke on behalf of the visitors during the powhiri, and Ariana was on the takata whenua side supporting Onuku, where her father is the chairman of the marae. After the powhiri the visitors received a tour of the whare, and a history talk by Henare Robinson and George Tikao. Then Penny Carnaby (the National Librarian of NZ) presented a lovely framed picture of Onuku, by French artist, Charles Meryon. This was followed by afternoon tea, and a visit to the historic church at the marae.
