Adding a posting? – Hints to make it easier to browse Counterculture

Counterculture can become a victim of its own success – lots of interesting postings can make it hard to scan for relevant postings or find a particular one you are looking for. Following are some hints for how to make your posting easy to scan and read without making it hard to find other postings. Things to think about are titles, spacing (white text), and using the Read More functionality.

1) Don’t forget your title – it’s a separate entry box at the top. Without a title field Counterculture can’t create links properly eg on the RSS feed from the Camelot wiki. A heading or title in the body box doesn’t suffice.
2) Be careful of spacing. White spacing is important for readability, but too much adds to scrolling needed to scan all the items on the home page. Avoid unnecessary extra spacing between paragraphs or at the end of your posting.
3) If you’ve got a long posting consider breaking it up like this one has been. On the Create new item form in the blog, there’s the “Title” input box, a “Body” input box, and then quite a lot further down an “Extended (optional)” box. If you put content in this box, it doesn’t display immediately in the blog, but creates a “[ Read More ]” link after the text you put in the body box. This link opens out the full posting, including what’s in the Extended box. If you later want to edit this posting, you’ll need to click on the Extended tab in the Edit Item box.

And another small point – please remember to sign your posting. It’s very helpful to know who has written something, and your usercode is not always easily interpreted.

Any questions – please ask Library IT.
