Proposal to delete some indexes from Horizon

Library IT are proposing some changes to the indexes maintained on Horizon. Note that this only refers to the indexes accessed through the Horizon software itself (PAC), and not the indexes on the Library Catalogue (HIP). The reason why we need to delete these indexes is to make room for the EEBO records to be loaded (nearly 105,000 records).

We have had some initial discussions with Collection Services, and they have recommended that we remove the following indexes from Horizon PAC: CD title keyword; video title keyword; and electronic serials keyword.

Library IT would also like to make a change to the global keyword index in Horizon. Currently this index is made up of six separate indexes which are combined to make the global keyword index. These parts are: author keyword; bib keyword; bib uniform keyword (240 tag); contents; series keyword; and subject keyword. We would like to remove the contents part of this index. The tags that are affected are 500 $a, 505 $a $t $r, and 260 $b. Note that these tags will still be able to be searched in the keywords index in the Library Catalogue.

If these proposed changes would affect your use of the Horizon PAC, please add a comment below.

  1. Please don’t remove the searching of the contents for the global keyword.
For Maori and Pacific material this if often very important. Students will miss key resources (usually chapters in books) which can only be found this way.

  2. Global keyword in the catalogue will not change and will continue to include contents. The indexes refered to above are only accessible via the Horizon client so will not affect student access. Keyword indexes in the catalogue are quite separate from the Horizon keyword indexes Cheers Anne

  3. Note that we are only talking about the indexes in PAC. This is the staff-only version which is accessed through the Horizon software. These changes will not affect the Library Catalogue (aka HIP) which the users access.
