Art Collections Curator Vacancy

The University of Canterbury is seeking an enthusiastic, innovative person with excellent people skills to manage its Art Collections. The art collection at Canterbury contains over 3000 works of art. The position will be located in the Macmillan Brown Library and report to the University Librarian through the Macmillan Brown Library Manager. This is an opportunity to work with a dynamic team to enhance the use of the art collections for teaching, research and community outreach.

The successful applicant will have a tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline and, preferably, a qualification in art collection management and/or extensive experience in managing art collections in a public gallery, museum or library. He or she will have a sound understanding of registration, collection management and curatorial processes. In addition, the successful applicant will need to demonstrate a commitment to providing excellent customer service and to be an excellent communicator, able to multi task and meet deadlines, and able to both lead and participate in teamwork.

The position involves liaising with stakeholders in the university, supervising storage and handling of art, location of art around the campus, and dealing with donors of art on behalf of the university as a major means of developing the university’s collections. The position also takes responsibility for providing access to works of art, and for providing an enquiry service.
