Summon: new features and Web of Science integration

Serials Solutions have completed the Summon unified index upgrade that was previously postponed. There are a number of bug fixes and improvements. For more details see below.

In addition to the index upgrade, there is a new Web of Science feature which integrates citation counts into search results (when on campus), and allows Summon to index all Web of Science content. Again, more details follow.

Index upgrade bug fixes and new features

• More sophisticated handling of punctuation in search queries. Often caused when users are doing named item searches or cut and paste of an excerpt of text into the search box.
• Significant improvements in smart-deduping where records from multiple sources are merged together. Users will now get the benefits of DOI’s from CrossRef, full text from publishers, and enhanced metadata from aggregators – all in a single item on a results list.
• Normalization of diacritics so that they are indexed as one. This resolves the issue when searching for Zauberflote and wanting to find results for Zauberflöte as was discussed previously on this list.
• Bug fixes regarding the display of the AutoComplete feature for a more polished user experience
• Improvements to advanced search – including the ability to search by ISBN

Web of Science

This highly anticipated feature allows Summon to not only index all of the Web of Science content, but also the highly valued Citation Counts. A subset of the content will have associated cited by reference counts starting tomorrow [Fri 17th Sep], and the rest will be flowing in over the next few weeks. Additionally, the citation counts will play a role in two ways in Summon.

1. Summon will utilize the citation counts as a part of the relevancy ranking algorithms. This will allow records with higher citation counts to bubble up to the top over those with lower citation counts. This will be available for all customers, regardless of a subscription to Web of Science.
2. Summon will display the citation counts in the search result list for authenticated users
