Project MUSE eBooks

“Project MUSE has released a beta web site previewing its combined digital book and journal content. The beta site will be available through the end of this year, allowing scholars, librarians, and students to become familiar with the newly enhanced platform before the changeover to accommodate MUSE’s forthcoming eBook Collections on January 1, 2012.”

More details are available on Project MUSE eBooks Collections page.

  1. This is a welcome development. I look forward to more ebooks being added in due course, and for more subject areas. It would be good to have links to these ebooks added to the catalogue.

  2. Everyone has free access to the sample books on the MUSE beta site but from next year we will only have access to the full text of journals we have subscribed to. We haven’t bought any MUSE eBooks but they would be worth considering for the following reasons:

    – There will be no DRM on the MUSE electronic book files
    – Libraries have perpetual access rights to the books purchased
    – Unlimited downloading and printing of book chapter PDF files is included
    – There are no restrictions on downloads or printing.
    – MUSE encourages linking directly to MUSE books and book chapters from electronic reserves, courseware systems, etc. No special permission is required to link.

At the moment, MUSE eBooks are only available for purchase in collections, but they are looking at options for single title purchasing in future.
