For several days we have been having problems with international web sites. Sometimes they are fine, but not always. Symptoms can include:
– very slow to load
– blank screen although the page reports loading reports ‘done’
– not all elements load (so you may get part of the page, but not all)
– error messages e.g. stating compression is not supported
– etc.
This seems to be a problem only with international sites and the more complex the site e.g. LibGuides, the more obvious the problems are. LibGuides is a particular problem because we edit the pages but with poor connectivity this can cause problems.
I have also seen problems with Multisearch (although not so often and it is a simpler site), and a number of other sites.
I discussed this informally with ICTS last week and they knew they had a problem. One fix they tried just made things worse and I sense they are reluctant to try too much until exams are over (which is close). However, I have also lodged a formal request via the Service Desk because the problems are severe enough that it needs to be recorded in their system.

could Deborah’s counterculture post (Friday 15th June) about Amazon Web Services explain some of this slow down?
I wondered when it first happened but the AWS thing was apparently caused by a power outage due to a large storm, so just a short term issue – nothing that should be still having effects now.

As of Thursday morning this problem is still creating havoc when I try to update my libguides.
I have been trying to edit the Education guide for a few days now and find that I can not access the orange drop-down menus. Logged in on 3 seperate occassions and still no joy.

I am able to update libguides, using the rich text editor as normal, on my laptop without any problems. However it hasn’t been working on my work PC since Tuesday or earlier. This indicates that the problem is here at UC doesn’t it.
I just heard from Otago Uni that they are having the same problem with LibGuides – so perhaps not just us? Sara
Springshare can’t find any faults from their end and aren’t getting any other complaints. LibGuides are pretty rich in features, so any problems with loading international sites would probably be more noticeable on their site. We’re noticing similar problems with other international sites, just not to the same extent. Also, I’m not seeing any of the same problems with LibGuides at home that I’m getting at work.
Let’s hope the fix ICTS are putting in place on Friday will solve the problem.

Still the same problem on my pc this morning.

Attempts to create a copied box still fail – I tried with IE (adjusting settings as stipulated by the Libguides login page) and Firefox. IE went through the process, but no new box appeared. Firefox failed to provide the list of boxes in the drop-down, so didn’t even get to the stage of attempting to create a "new" copied box.

I am having problems with ‘key databases’ script on the GEOG guide. It is loading OK in Firefox but not IE. Bit of a worry as I’m writing up a task sheet to go to a lecturer by Thursday (Jul 5th) for a semester 2 class. Not sure if I should bypass LibGuides for this class, just to be on the safe side.

The latest from ICTS:
"Yes, we are suffering from a Internet bottleneck. THe Firewall has become a little CPU bound. We are working on a couple of solutions which will be implemented over the next three weeks. Server Group"
