Jargon-busting

Kia ora koutou,

I am in the process of creating a wiki page that lists jargon (including acronyms) in the library field, as well as in the university environment, as a reference source.

e.g. library words like PAC, HD, LMS, recall, LC, Summon

e.g. uni words like SMT, MDT

Suggestions are welcome! Please email me your words, or add them in the comments to this post, and I’ll add them into the list.

Thanks,
Fiona

  1. The Original (ie the very first) library project was called Jargon Busters….

That might get a rocket start to what you are continuing.

  2. Here is a link from Milner Library Illinois State University to some common library terms with translations into English and several other languages. This might be helpful to people for whom English is not their first language. (There is also a Library Jargon Translator, which looked promising, but I can’t get it to work. I might try another browser in case this is the problem). Caroline
