Wall chargers for Apple products

Hi all

No doubt you will have heard about Apple’s recent recall of certain runs of wall plugs for their chargers – click here for more information.  Staff with Apple equipment (e.g. ipads, ipods, iphones, macbooks)  purchased between 2003 and 2015 should check their wall chargers as there is a risk they could cause electric shocks.

For UC-purchased devices (e.g. ipads)  that have IT asset tags on them –  ITS are participating in the exchange process and have set this up starting today and running through to March 4th.  If there are left over adapters they are planning to provide these to staff and student with non-UC purchased devices.

Here is the communication from ITS:

We have received an initial limited shipment of replacement AC wall plug adapters from our supplier. With the assistance of the IT Service Desk, we will be offering a University exchange program via two locations.

If you have an IT Asset Tag on your affected device you are eligible to access the University Apple AC wall plug exchange program.

The next step is; please bring the affected adapter and device to one of the following locations.  The exchange program is only active during the times indicated.

Ilam Campus : Puaka-James Hight Library Service Desk between the hours of 8:00 am – 10:00 am and 3:30pm – 5:00 pm.

Dovedale Campus : Technical Support, Dovedale Village, DG03. Between 11:00 am – 12:00pm

* We are hoping to extend the University Apple AC wall plug exchange program to staff and students once all affected University of Canterbury AC wall plug adapters have been replaced.

To know if your adapter wall plug is affected, detach it from the adapter and compare it to the images below. An affected wall plug adapter has 4 or 5 characters or no characters on the inside slot where it attaches to an Apple power adapter. Redesigned adapters have a 3-letter regional code in the slot (AUS).
