Central Library: power outage today

Kia ora tatou,

Around 10,00pm last night, power in the Puaka-James Hight building was affected.  Electricians have assessed the issue this morning and have advised that the heavy rain last night caused a short-circuit in the lower floors (undercroft area) of Puaka-James Hight Building.

  • Current Situation:
  • Central Library is open
  • Even numbered floors have lights
  • North East lifts have lights
  • Odd numbered floors have no lights and may not have power as well
  • South East lifts have no lights
  • Level 4 appears to have a bulge in the ceiling and Joan has cordoned this area off with hazard tape
  • Jenny Owens is assessing any potential risk to stock and artwork, and she will liaise directly with key people as needed
  • Open Day activities are running as per usual
  • Some library staff on level 5 have moved to other floors that have power supply and a spare PC
  • Cleaners have done what they can on each floor, for toilets and rubbish
  • I’ll arrange for an update to be added to the Library website, advising visitors of the outage

Electricians are working to resolve the issue, and we hope to have things back to normal as soon as possible.  Please check back here for any further updates.

Nga mihi,
Te Paea

  1. Engineering services have advised power will be restored to levels 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and the south east lifts within 30 mins (10.15am). Please note power on level 5 may take longer as this is a separate issue.

  2. Power has been restored as per previous comment. It appears Level 4 North is still out and I have advised FM in case they were not aware. Huge thanks to Engineering Services for the speedy response and resolution!
