As posted in May, eBook titles are routinely added or removed from our Academic Complete eBook subscription.
Since June, 6211 titles have been added to our subscription. At the end of this year, 3021 eBook titles will be removed from Academic Complete at the request of publishers. The list of titles affected is available here: K:/LIBR-Library/Info-Resources\Non-Continuing-Resources/E-books/2016 December PQEbook Sub Removals – University of Canterbury Library.xlsx
We will be buying continued access to some of these titles. The “Usage of Removed Titles” tab details what has been used this year at UC. Many Taylor and Francis titles have seen considerable use. This prompted Access and Collections to consider how continuing access can be provided to users of this vanishing content. Our thinking was to try and identify titles being used for learning and teaching. We thought to target titles with 40+ uses in 2016, thinking that level of usage demonstrates cohort rather than individual use.
Access will be through “EBS”. Following discussions with Taylor and Francis, we concluded their “evidence-based purchasing” or “EBS” model will be a good option for us. EBS allows us to open up access to not just the affected titles, but to front-file Taylor and Francis content that would not be available on Academic Complete.
In summary, what does this mean?
- Withdrawn titles that have seen high use (40+ uses) on Academic Complete will be made available via Taylor and Francis on their DRM-free platform wherever possible
- Access will cease to withdrawn titles that have seen lower use. However, individual titles can be ordered as necessary in 2017
- Work with Taylor and Francis in early 2017 to include newly published material
- Updates to Library Catalogue and Multisearch to reflect these changes
