Continuing Resources Review update

Kia ora Subject Librarians,

Following preparation of data by the LAC team, we are now at the second stage of the Continuing Resources Review which is checking high cost/download titles before we send them out to the LLOs for wider comment.

The Review will support the UC Goal of managing our resources wisely.

Specifically, outcomes we desire from the Review are:

  1. Identification and Cancellation of titles no longer required to support UC, learning, teaching and research
  2. Freeing up funds to support new and changing needs at UC

We are requesting your input on checking the high cost/download titles by 31st May

Access the list of high cost per download titles here

The criteria for “high cost” is any subscription costing over $20 per download.  These titles should be seriously considered for cancellation.

This involves:

  • Checking the titles in your area
  • Commenting on any titles you don’t think should be reviewed and sent to the LLOs with a view to their cancellation (and why)
  • Commenting on anything that is unclear, may need amending or where you need more information.

At this stage we are just providing you with the eJournals – print titles still to come

LAC staff are still working on the print titles and we will be releasing these for your comments shortly.  We will be treating print and standing order titles differently this year – more on this to come.

How to make comments on the titles

Other notes

  • Data is from 2016 payments and usage statistics
  • Data from the 2014 and 2015 reviews is available here
  • We’re happy to meet with any groups or individuals to provide more background – just send a meeting request
  • Multi-disciplinary databases and packages will be considered separately (last year’s discussion on Web of Science and JCR along with the recent discussion on Compendex are examples of that).  The packages are generally well under the $20 cost/download mark.
  • Information on the Review will also be provided at the LLO meeting next week.

New recommendations

Successful new recommendations are dependent on our ability to make cancellations and savings elsewhere including through this review exercise.  Decisions on new subs are normally made in September.  We are trialling a new SharePoint form where you can submit your recommendations.  Comments on the form are most welcome.

Many thanks for your assistance,
