Staff Development Session

A forensic foray…what YOU need to know about saving the digital

We all know that so much of our working and personal lives is lived in the digital realm these days. As information professionals, it’s becoming essential for all of us to understand how our traditional principles of librarianship, particularly kaitiakitanga/guardianship, can be applied to digital collections.

In this staff development session, Alison W, Nicole, Erin and Jo will share what they’ve learned from workshops on digital preservation and managing born digital collections (i.e. items that are created as digital files). Much of this thinking applies principles we already know as librarians, but there are also some useful new ways of using technology that we all need to know about. For this session we will cut through the jargon and keep things simple.

Why do you need to know this stuff? Because as a library professional it’s coming whether you like it or not! Plus have you ever thought about what is going to happen to all those digital photos on your phone/tablet/laptop/PC? These principles can also be easily applied to the preservation of your personal digital ‘collections’.
