Access and Collections role in copyright compliance checking

Access and Collections would like to clarify the scope of material we check for copyright compliance.  Our focus is now on ensuring copyright compliance for material covered by the CLNZ Licence.

The following material is covered by the CLNZ licence and needs to be recorded correctly for the CLNZ reports – these items should always be uploaded via Learn’s Course Material icon:
1) Scans from print books – up to 10% or 1 chapter for the duration of the course
2) Scans from print journals – 1 complete article per issue or additional if on the same subject
3) International newspapers (print only) – 1 article from each publication
4) NZ newspapers (print and internet) – up to 5 articles per class per day

All other material uploaded to Learn is the responsibility of the lecturer/uploader and will no longer be checked by Access and Collections staff.

Access and Collections can apply to CLNZ for transactional licences in situations where we would like to copy more than 10%.  The Library will offer to pay for these transactional licences depending on demand.  We can also apply to publishers to purchase and for permission to use electronic copies of articles in Learn where publishers provide this service.  The cost normally depends on the number of students needing access.

Helen and Tim are planning to run a staff development session on this in September.  Feel free to contact either of us with any queries that would be useful to cover in such a session.
