As part of the Extracurricular Information Literacy project, we have been discussing our face to face Library 101 offerings, and whether we should continue offering them. Classes in 2016 averaged 4 attendees, and those in 2017 averaged 2.
Based on the low attendance and the amount of staff time they take to run, it has been decided that we will no longer run face to face Library 101 tutorials. However, we will continue to offer online 15 minute Adobe Connect sessions, which cover a similar range of topics as the Library 101 classes.
To replace these classes, we are working on creating a suite of online, interactive tutorials that students will be able to complete at their leisure. There isn’t an exact timeline yet as to when they will all be completed, but in the interim students can be directed to the Adobe Connect classes, or to their subject librarians for one on one help.
If you have any comments or suggestions, please email me (Kiera) as the project manager.
Hi Kiera,
What was the average attendance for the online classes last year? I would have thought it was similar to the physical classes based on the ones I did in the past. Just wondering what the justification for continuing them is?
Seems to me that unless they become compulsory or students are strongly encouraged to enrol by their lecturers, voluntary library class (online or physical) will always have too low attendance to make them worthwhile.
Cheers,
Nick
Just re-read your post and realised you said it was an interim measure having the online classes. Sorry missed that the first time… 🙁
Hi Nick,
The main reason we’re offering the online classes is that Kathryn is running them for the education students regardless, but they’re general enough that other students can still attend and learn the skills should they so choose.
Cheers,
Kiera
I see, thanks Kiera. That makes sense.
