Rosie Sykes passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning (20th January). Her mother was with her and she went peacefully.
I like to think the earthquake we felt that evening was a chariot of angels come to spirit her away.
Rosie’s funeral will be held at 1pm on Wednesday 24th January at John Rhind’s Christchurch chapel – see https://johnrhind.co.nz/contact/ for location details.
Please pass on the details to any people you know who won’t see this counterculture post.

It is really sad to hear of Rosie’s passing but perhaps a blessing she has passed peacefully and is now at rest as she had some real challenges in the last few years in her battle with cancer. I have arranged for flowers to be sent to Margaret, her devoted mum, on behalf of her Library colleagues from the 38 years that she worked with us.
I am going to be saying a few words at the funeral. If anyone has any special memories or words they’d like me to share on their behalf please let me know. If you’d like to say a few words yourself, I am sure that will be appreciated too.
I have supplied a copy of the special pānui edition from last year to Rosie’s family too.

This morning I answered a phone enquiry which turned out to be an elderly gentleman who had read the death notice in the paper and wanted to know if this was the same Rosie Sykes who had been so helpful to him many years ago when he was researching some topic or other. He repeated many times how impressed he was by her knowledge, and how grateful for her help. She obviously made an impression because this is going back something like 25 to 30 years. Perhaps he had a bit of a crush on her…
