Call for Volunteers – Te Wiki o te Reo Māori | Māori Language Week Campaign 2018

Are you … enthusiastic? … willing? … able? … up for a challenge? … prepared to make a difference? … why not volunteer for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori?

Planning for UC Puna Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2018 is now underway with the theme for this year announced by Te Taura Whiri i Te Reo Māori as being, ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori | Let’s make the Māori language strong’.

As the project lead, I am seeking expressions of interest from volunteers to lead/support/advise on different key initiatives that will be held throughout the week.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori also coincides with Mahuru Māori, also known as Māori Language Month, and is celebrated throughout Aotearoa by passionate advocates of te reo Māori (register your interest with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa here

There are 8 key initiatives based on the overarching theme, ‘Kia Kaha te…. | Let’s make ….. strong.’ Each initiative is looking for:

An Initiative Lead: Someone who is enthusiastic, has a can do attitude, and gets things done
Initiative Support: Willing to support and do the odd bits and pieces, time constraints. Can work on set tasks within initiative.
Marketing and Communication: Willing to work alongside UC Puna Marketing Team

Initiative One: Kia Kaha te Ako Reo Māori | Let’s make learning te reo Māori strong
Main Idea: To attend Café Kōrero
Outcome: Organize a group of Library staff to attend Café Kōrero

Initiative Two: Kia Kaha te Kimi Kupu Māori | Let’s make te reo Māori word games strong
Main Idea: Set up Kimi Kupu (Scrabble), Word Find, and/or Wharewhare
Outcome: Competitions! Encourage downtime through ‘word’ competitions

Initiative Three: Kia Kaha te Whakaatu Kaupapa Māori | Let’s make Māori language exhibition/displays strong
Main Idea: He Ara Kōrero | Whakaatu Whakaaro – Displays/Exhibition to highlight kaupapa Māori, reo Māori material sourced from UC library Collections and other Kaupapa Māori projects.
Secondary: He Ara Kōrero | Whakaatu Whakaaro – A ‘cultural art trail map’ created to highlight art with strong Māori cultural concepts and/or created by Māori artists within Puaka-James Hight.

Initiative Four: Kia Kaha Te Mahi Māori | Let’s make Māori language craft stations strong
Main Idea: Set up Māori Cultural Activity stations to encourage downtime through ‘fun activities’
Outcome: One fully equipped station per Library with instruction booklets and competitions!

Initiative Five: Kia Kaha Te Pānui Reo Māori | Let’s make Reading te reo Māori strong
Main Idea: Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori Social Media Campaign | Regularly scheduled Te Reo Māori posts running for the whole of Māori Language week.
Outcome: 56 Māori Language/Kaupapa Māori posts = Total of 8 posts per day, to appear on different mixed media platforms such as UC Puna Facebook, Instagram, Tweet, & The Insiders Guide. All posts on Māori Language Day 14 September 2018, to be about The History of The Māori Language and/or in te reo Māori.

Initiative Six: Kia Kaha Te Āki Reo Māori | Let’s make Encouraging te reo Māori strong
Main Idea: Set up te reo Māori storytime for UC Learning Centre Children
Outcome: 2x 30 Minute Storytime with a te reo Māori flavour

Initiative Seven: Kia Kaha Te Kōrero Pukapuka Māori | Let’s make Reading te reo Māori books strong
Main Idea: 50x Te Reo Stories Read Out Loud by UC Puna staff members & other UC staff volunteers. It is the aim to start a movement amongst the Ngā Puna, Ngā Kete and our library users to start posting videos of themselves reading Māori Language books – encourage the hashtags
Outcome: Full video recordings available (permissions tbc) | Mash Up Short Video of all readings

Initiative Eight: Kia Kaha Te Whakaaro Māori | Let’s make open thought on Kaupapa Māori strong
Main Idea: Sponsored Symposium Day with possible guest speakers
Outcome: Provocative Symposium based on the theme ‘Kia kaha te…’
Note: To be advised by the Māori Development Team

There is scope for other initiatives such as: Waiata Sessions, Kapa Haka performance, themed workspaces, or others for those who also wish to lead these. Also volunteer Māori picture book readers wanted. Challenge yourself, or surprise yourself (or me)
