Significance

Kia ora koutou,

Significance:

“The degree to which jobs are viewed by members as having an important impact on other people (either inside or outside the organisation).”

In the most recent OEI/OCI survey results, the Library as a whole signaled that significance is an area that we would benefit from focusing on.  Significance was one of the only causal factors that did not improve in the 2017 survey.  In fact our score was lower this time.

In the survey, significance was associated with the following questions:

To what extent do you agree or disagree that each of the statements below describes your job?

  • A lot of people can be affected by how well I do my work.
  • My job has a substantial impact on the work or lives of other people.
  • Poor performance on my part would have little or no impact on others (either within or outside the organisation).

It would be good to explore why we feel our jobs have little impact on others, and to decide on ways that we might change this perception.

I would like to put together a group of interested people from across the library to look into this issue and to come up with some concrete things we can do to improve our feelings of significance.

If you would like to be involved, could you please check with your manager and let me know?  I think this would take about an hour  a week, and the goal is to report to the Library Managers at the end of August, with an implementation of ideas period during September-November.

I very much look forward to hearing from you.

Ngā mihi nui,

Sara
