Problems with Edge browser on campus – askLIVE, 360 link, remote scripts in LibGuides

Kia ora koutou

Over the last few days we have become aware of problems with Edge browser on campus computers and some of our library apps.

AskLIVE
The main asklive page (student/guest site not staff login) is ok but if campus users click on the AskLIVE logo on the contact us or stay connected pages they will get an “Hmmm…can’t reach this page” error message in the centre of the screen.

Multisearch/Google Scholar/Web of Science full-text links
Any full text links that use 360link (link resolver product sometimes used by the search interfaces mentioned to link to the full text of articles) will also display an “Hmmm…can’t reach this page” in the centre of the screen.  Not all Multisearch pages use this technique – you can tell the ones that do by the presence of a library helper sidebar that loads on the right hand side of the screen.  You will also notice the library logo not loading in this sidebar.

Remote scripts in LibGuides
Any LibGuides pages pulling in content from library.canterbury.ac.nz e.g. new titles list, lists of encyclopaedias/reference materials or lists of key databases will display the same error message.

There may be more we have not come across yet – if you spot any not listed here please let e-services know.

We have logged a job with ITS about this and know it has to do with the internet security settings around “local intranet” sites and how Edge applies these.
Until we have a concrete solution – here are some workarounds.

  • Use a different browser!  You may also want to change your default browser to another browser – Edge is the default in Windows10.
  • If you really love Edge you can add some sites to your Trusted sites list in Internet Options (control panel) and get most of the above working again.   Contact Romy for help with this.

The issues only apply to people on the UC network – off campus users should not have these issues unless they are using Direct Access/Workplace Connection e.g. have a staff laptop.
