I contacted Facilities Services recently in order to ask a few questions about recycling. Here are the questions and answers:
Q. Is cardboard allowed in the red paper recycling wheelie bins?
A. If it is large thick box cardboard then it is best to flatten it and put that to the side of the bin, but if it is thin stationery cardboard that is OK to go into the bins. The reason for not wanting the thick box cardboard in the bins is that it takes up too much room and they do have to separate it from the papers so it is easier for them if the boxes are flattened and put beside the bins if possible.
Q. Is the shiny paper wrapping from the photocopier paper OK to be placed in the paper recycling bins?
A. No. The shiny covers should be put in the landfill bins rather than the paper recycling bin.
Q. Is the long, plastic strapping that is found wrapped around items such as boxes of photocopier paper allowed to be placed in the recycling bins?
A. No. This should be put in the landfill bin.
Q. Are paper wrappers from teabags, and wooden stirring sticks allowed in the small, green organics bins?
A. No. They should be put in the landfill bin.
