Sustainable packaging

One of UC’s key objectives is to drive environmental sustainability.  We also have a UC Waste Plan  which aims to reduce single use packaging on campus.

One of the ways the Library can help achieve this goal is to reduce our use of plastic packaging. To help meet this goal the Library will be implementing the following in regard to packaging for books sent out for interloan and distance customers.

  • Re-use as much packaging as we can that we receive, particularly biodegradable material eg. paper
  • Use up our existing supplies of plastic packaging eg. bubble bags
  • Cease to purchase plastic packaging and only purchase biodegradable products.
  • Contact our book/journal suppliers who post us items in unsustainable packaging and ask them to consider using biodegradable products

We already practice lots of re-use of packaging and many thanks to all who do this.  Glenna will be involved in ordering new biodegradable products and ensuring packaging is re-used. I’m also happy to be contacted if you have other ideas of how we can be more environmentally sustainable.
