Problems with some databases and Internet Explorer on campus

Hi all

Since ITS put in some changes to campus-wide Internet Explorer (IE) settings for staff and some postgrad students last week we have had reports of some problems with some of our databases.  Their change makes anything that has a *.canterbury.ac.nz in it’s URL come up in compatibility mode in IE.  As most of our resources go through ezproxy.canterbury.ac.nz this means they too are being displayed in compatibility mode.  Problem is that many of our databases do not support IE in compatibility mode e,g, ScienceDirect, Ebsco, IEEE and web of science.  You may get a pop-up error message or the site will just not load properly (e.g. cut-off pdfs in Ebsco).  We have reported this issue to ITS and they are in the process of getting it fixed (has to be approved yet).  Until then, if you come across any problems with sites, the setting can be manually disabled in IE.

Go to the tools menu and select Compatibility View Settings.  Untick the “Display intranet sites in Compatibility View tickbox.  The page should reload correctly but you may have to close and re-open your browser session.

Note – disabling the setting above may mean you have problems with the real intranet sites (including exchange/OWA – always opening in light mode) ITS was trying to fix in the first place.

  1. ITS have informed me that they are now planning to roll-back the original change in settings – most likely on Monday, so this issue should be resolved soon.

  2. Hi folks. I’ve had an update from ITS – they are unable to put in the fix until Thursday 15th due to a current global freeze on changes.

  3. ITS report they’ve now rolled back the original change they made and the compatibility problem with IE should now be resolved.
