Disaster Response Team

For many years the Library has maintained a Disaster Response Team, along with documentation and equipment, in order that a planned, and co-ordinated response will be available when a “disaster” affects library materials.

Information on this team is on the wiki.

With the departure of Terri Elder from Library employment, I am pleased to announce that Jenny Owens is now prepared to take over the Disaster Response Coordinator role.

I have also asked Jenny to look at the following aspects of disaster response:
Size, structure and membership of the team
Clarifying terms of reference for the team
How the current documentation (a Response Manual and a Disaster Plan) fits with the Library Continuity Plan
Co-ordinate the maintenance and upgrading of the contents of the disaster carts
To propose an annual routine of 1-2 training sessions per year

When I have received the above from Jenny, I will put more information up on Counterculture.

I would like to see a reinvigoration of this aspect of library work, ready for when needed.

Revalidation Workshop for Professional Registration

Do you have professional registration?

Are you grappling with what is required to revalidate your registration?

If your answers to both these questions are yes, then the LIANZA Aoraki committee invite you to a Revalidation Workshop that is being organised for members on Tuesday 13 April at 6 pm
Venue: the Okeover Room, Okeover House, University Drive, at the University of Canterbury.
The aim of this workshop is to:
Assist registered librarians progress their need to keep a journal for revalidation purposes
Increase awareness and confidence around registration and revalidation requirements.

Elaine Sides and Karen Willyams will be running this workshop. They will:
• provide you with a brief overview of what information is already available,
• look at how the training opportunities your organisation has provided will fit with revalidation, and
• assist you to start your own journal.

Study support by the Library

I would like to remind all staff considering undertaking further tertiary study, that there is a well documented process that must be followed in order to be eligible for any support from the Library.

Please visit the Camelot wiki page on study.

Please also review the UC Policy (Staff Tertiary Study Assistance), and the Library SOP (Study Assistance for UC Library Staff).

Support is also available for study related to acquiring library qualifications. See the relevant wiki page.

It is essential that any proposed study options are initially discussed with your manager, and the request is documented at PD&R sessions. If it is agreed that the Library will support a course of study, documentation from HR is completed, and this is placed within your personal staff record.

Please note that …”retrospective applications for Staff Tertiary Study Assistance will not be accepted.” (UC Policy, p. 3)

Smoking on campus

Now that a new intake of students is back on campus, many will be unaware of the smoke-free Dovedale campus, and the use of designated areas for smoking here at Ilam.

If any Library staff have difficulties or complaints about the effect of smoke or smokers upon their working environment, please raise the issue with Ian Town (Deputy Vice Chancellor).

In the past few years I have taken any problems to UC Health & Safety, but I am now advised that Ian Town is the person who should be made aware of this issue.

Thanks

Philip
