Meebo.com seems to be down at the moment – the whole site is inaccessible, not just Meebo rooms. If you’re rostered on to AskLive, please try to connect to the service several times throughout the shift. Hopefully they’ll restore the service soon.

AskLIVE service working again
The Meebo team have confirmed that they were having server problems yesterday, but the service should now be working properly again.
If anyone continues to experience problems, please report them to Library IT.
AskLIVE temporarily unavailable
Meebo are having problems with their service, so our Librarian’s room is currently down. We’ll monitor it and let you know when the service has returned.
Update 4:15pm
We are still experiencing connection problems with Meebo. The service seems to be intermittent at the moment.
A message has been added to the Web page notifying users that the AskLIVE service is temporarily unavailable. However, please continue to monitor the service during the evening and try to answer any questions if you are able.
Hopefully Meebo will fix the problem soon.
AskLIVE update
We’ve discovered a bug with the Meebo widget (used by students on the AskLIVE page). If users send a message with more than 255 characters then we won’t receive it. They won’t be given a warning that their message didn’t go through.
If you have a user who seems to have problems sending their message:
1. Ask them to make sure they hit enter or return after choosing a nickname.
2. Ask them to break up their question into shorter sentences.
We’ve made some changes to the AskLIVE page to warn users about long messages. We’ll also ask Meebo to fix the problem.
Other issues:
– The first librarian on AskLIVE each morning should send a “Welcome to AskLIVE” message so that we can check if all the messages are being logged from the beginning of the day.
– If you have trouble connecting Pandion to Meebo, please check that you have enabled Internet Enabler.
– Sound alerts in Pandion will only work if Pandion isn’t your active window (i.e. you have minimised Pandion or are working in another Window). If you leave your computer you should minimise Pandion so you can hear the sound.
Please contact Library IT if you encounter any problems or issues.
AskLIVE logs
If you want to catch up on what’s been happening in AskLIVE before your session, you can browse through the day’s chat logs. Links to today’s logs and previous logs are available from the Camelot Information Services Page under AskLIVE.
Please note that the logs use U.S. West Coast time.
Some other suggestions to make the service easier to use:
– Message other librarians privately when handing over shifts. You can do this by double-clicking on their name in Pandion.
– Keep the “uclib” prefix on your name to identify you as a librarian – by all means change the rest of your name if you’d prefer.
Please report any problems with the service to Library IT.
Repository update for Info Services
Chapters in Books and Copyright
The UC Research Repository can only include books, or chapters from books, where the author has permission from the publisher to place a copy in an institutional repository, or if the author has retained Copyright ownership of the publication. In most cases Copyright will have been transferred to the publisher, so the author will need to check the details of any signed Copyright transfer agreements, or contact their publisher to seek permission.
If researchers submit chapters to us without this information, then they cannot be approved into the Repository. Information Librarians should explain these requirements to academics when they meet to discuss the Repository.
Students with ICTS problems
We’re getting a lot of students coming up to Library IT today with card problems, etc. Could desk staff please direct students with general IT problems to the ICTS office in the Loft on Level 5, and not to IT on level 5. This would hopefully save some confusion.
Thanks.
Removing items from display
Could all staff taking serials or books off display please make sure that they check in the items after using the display removal reports. We have found 492 items that still have an ‘on display’ status that shouldn’t, and several of these items had requests. Alison is updating these items to ‘in library’ and will notify the relevant branches about items with requests.
Just a reminder:
– Removing items from display will revert any changes to itype, collection and location back to the original codes
– Checking in the items will update the status to in library, or produce holds for requested items
Thanks
