Open Refine course

If you have ever had to go through a bunch of data, maybe in a spreadsheet, and you need to tidy it up somehow, let me introduce you to Open Refine, the most amazing tool for managing messy data.

I use it all the time.  As part of our Software Carpentry training I’m leading a half day course on it.  I’d love to have a few librarians in the mix, along with researchers

Figshare Institutional Data Repository

We now have an institutional figshare at https://figshare.canterbury.ac.nz
All staff are welcome to log in, and use it to upload datasets they want to make publicly available. This is a soft launch, and if you are interested, please get in touch and I’d like to talk to you through the process to see how we can improve documentation before we do a more public launch early next year.

I’m currently planning some workshops for library staff to introduce them to figshare and publishing data in general, watch this space…

We can migrate existing figshare accounts to the institutional account. It it intended to meet the needs of researchers who are mandated to share data for publishing, but it is more flexible than that, with options for selectively sharing data, projects shared inter/intra institutionally, and preserving data long term.
Please pass this to anyone you feel may be interested. There is some documentation at https://canterbury.libguides.com/figshare

Open Access Week – Community over Commercialisation

OA week this year (24-27th October) has a few fascinating sessions provided by OA Australsia, including:

27 October
2-4pm NZDT
Creating space for Indigenous and Pacific research
Part 1: Publishing avenues for Indigenous-led research

How do Indigenous academics share their research in a way that is meaningful to them and the communities they wish to serve? A number of Indigenous-led open access journals have been set up with the purpose of exploring Indigenous and Pacific issues and concerns, providing an opportunity to disseminate research. This session will explore the driving force behind the development of these journals, and the challenges in getting Indigenous research out into the scholarly community.

Part 2: Engagement with indigenous knowledge

How do Indigenous communities share their knowledge in a way that aligns with their community rules and protocols? How can we ensure Indigenous knowledge is treated respectfully when it is in the public domain? This session will explore some of the recent initiatives seeking to tackle these questions.

Help Wanted: Editor’s Symposium

Kia ora!

In early September the Library is facilitating a symposium for journal editors.  Often editors struggle along on their own, with no real local support, and this event is designed to give them somewhere to share expertise and talk about the issues that affect them.  All staff and (postgraduate) students will be welcome.

We need some help with the organisation of the event.  People who can be there on the day, but more urgently, some people who can help us with organising the program.  It will require a few hours work, emailing academics, and scheduling their time.

If you’re interested, drop me a line.

Ngā mihi nui,

Zotero Support Workshop for Librarians

Kia ora,

I’ve added a 2 hour support workshop for Zotero on Tuesday the  14th of June (next week).  It will cover things like:

  • Installation Hell
  • Zotero Web and Group Libraries
  • Syncing
  • Resolvers and Proxies
  • Reports
  • Translators
  • A quick overview of Citation Style Language, and the CSL editor.

Amongst other things.

This will be an informal workshop where we help each other learn.

If you want to get up to speed with Zotero first there is an introductory online workshop tomorrow:

Zotero – handle your bibliographies with simple, free software

“Zotero [zoh-TAIR-oh] is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, cite, and share your research sources” We think that’s an understatement – it’s all that and much more! This face to face course introduces Zotero as a research management tool and will demonstrate quick and easy ways of working with reference information. If you’re currently using an alternative reference management application, we’ll also show you how to migrate your information across to Zotero.

By the end of this course attendees will have a good understanding of how to:

  • Enter reference information into a Zotero library using range of techniques
  • Link PDFs and other files to Zotero citations
  • Cite references with Microsoft Word
  • Work with automatically created reference lists
  • Use collections, tags and searching for reference management
  • Transfer libraries from other software such as EndNote
  • Back-up a Zotero library.

Funds and prizes: a few things to remind PG students of

There are two initiatives we can remind postgrads and early career researchers about – the Library Open Access Fund, and the UC Foundation Doctoral Publication Prize

Doctoral Publication Prize.
If a student has work accepted for publishing while they are studying, and they are the lead author, they can apply for a prize of $1000 if they publish in a Q1 journal, or $500 in another scimago ranked publication. There are a few other qualifications, like they’ll need to have a verified ORCID number.

Library Open Access Fund
The LOAF can fund costs for Open Access publishing for students and early career researchers. The fund has increased in 2021 to $80,000, and we really want to encourage applications for it. The criteria are essentially – OK journal, not hybrid unless it is in transformation to completely OA, have tried to fund from elsewhere, at least partially.
There is a new comprehensive information sheet on the OA libguide.
