(Back to the) Future of Counterculture

Remember this post about how we’re going to ‘retire’ Counterculture?

Communication channels – Counterculture and Microsoft Teams

It turned out to be premature.

We’ve discovered the Bulletins feature on Teams won’t work as a replacement for Counterculture, because it only allows channel owners to create posts and there is no comment facility.  We’ve also investigated using Sharepoint but at the moment this is not possible.

However, ITS is developing a roadmap for the new intranet and internal teams communication is on the wishlist (as other teams have requested a blog -like function too). Long term the goal is still to minimise the number of platforms we’re using in the library to share information.

In the meantime, we will continue to use Counterculture for cross-library communications and the general chat on the LIbrary All Staff Teams for informal chat.

UC150 Queries

We are starting to see a number of queries at Macmillan Brown relating to finding information/images in preparation for the UC150 celebrations in 2023.

MB has many resources to support such queries, not all of which may be discoverable via Kā Kohika. Therefore, it is best to forward such requests to macbrown@libr.canterbury.ac.nz where the MB team can follow up on them.

If you do field a query that does not need to be forwarded onto MB, please make sure to record that it was a UC150 query. We are recording these enquiries in the Consultation Stats sheet on Sharepoint, using the Consultation Notes field. This is so we can track how the library is supporting the UC150 celebrations.

Ngā mihi,

Fiona

Nekerangi Paul portrait

Tēnā koutou katoa,

Last night the Macmillan Brown Team held a small event with Nekerangi Paul’s whānau and former staff of the Macmillan Brown Library. At this event, a beautiful portrait of Nekerangi was unveiled on the threshold to the Aotearoa Room along with a tuhinga that recognises Nekerangi’s significant and lasting contribution to the development of Macmillan Brown Library, UC Libraries and UC as a whole.

The event was small, following the advice of Te Waka Pākākano, but I know many more people across the library will have fond memories of Nekerangi and would like the opportunity to reflect on their memories of working with him. Please come and visit the Macmillan Brown Library to see Nekerangi’s portrait and read the tuhinga written by Corban Te Aika.

Ngā manaakitanga,

Fiona

Archives Cataloguer (Photographic Services Collection) – Fixed Term role

We are recruiting for a fixed term, full time archives cataloguer role within the Macmillan Brown Library. The purpose of this role is to arrange and describe the Photographic Services Collection  to enable its discovery and use in time for the UC150 celebrations in 2023.

This collection of photographs from the now defunct Photographic Services Department offers a rich visual insight into recent UC history, but we need help to make it discoverable. Knowledge of UC and/or Christchurch history will therefore be an asset to candidates, alongside a knowledge of archival description standards and experience in handling archives.

We are keen for someone to start as soon as possible, with a contract end date of 16 December 2022. Applications close 15 August 2022.

Please share with your networks. If you would like to discuss the role in more detail please get in touch.

Inside Out #20

Somehow, we are already at the end of semester 1! Being a relative ‘noob’, as my son would say, to this manager gig, I’ve found this semester has been a whirlwind.  So I really enjoyed watching this short video of UC students who graduated in absentia marking the occasion with a photographic opportunity. Yes, it’s marketing spin. But I recognised a Phd student I worked with as a subject librarian and seeing her with her family, and the other students with their whānau, was a timely reminder of why we all come to work each day – to support our students and help them achieve their goals.

Speaking of which, did you know that the UC Pacific Development Team runs an awesome outreach programme to high school students twice a year call UCMeXL? There are some lovely anecdotes in this story from several current UC students about their experiences of participating in this long-running programme.

We have our all staff UC Values workshops coming up and you might have looked up the values on the website. But have you watched the short videos for each value? (Tip: Run your mouse over each value to find the ‘play’ button. Also, Anne stars in the Tiakitanga video!). If you’re feeling a bit unsure about your pronunciation of any of the values, or the associated attributes of Tika, Pono and Aroha, check out this Te Reo Soundbites page which guides you in correct pronunciation with audio clips.

Finally, it’s almost Matariki – and 2022 is the first year Aotearoa is recognising Matariki with a national holiday. I recommend this podcast from Dr Rangi Matamua, who has spent 20 years researching Matariki and whose work has been integral in leading to this moment where we are nationally recognising Matariki. He shares his knowledge of Matariki and tells some great yarns along the way.

Kairuruku | Co-ordinator (Macmillan Brown Library) Appointment

I am very pleased to announce that Sarah Johnston has been appointed as the Kairuruku | Co-ordinator (Macmillan Brown Library).

We’ve been fortunate to have Sarah as a member of the Macmillan Brown team over the last year in several fixed term positions. Sarah has a  wealth of experience with – and enthusiasm for – cultural heritage collections through her previous work with Ngā Taonga Sound and Vision. She is passionate about connecting New Zealanders with their taonga and her experience in managing collection work and projects will be invaluable in the co-ordinator role.

Sarah’s start date for her new role is Monday 31 May.

Please join me in congratulating Sarah.
