Am bemused at this statement..what do others think ??

Librarians must be the first to develop skills in what we might
call scholarly publishing literacy, and then they must share these skills with their patrons. Thus, librarians need to add value to online information by helping validate it, and they must not blindly promote OA works just because they fulfill a certain collectivist ideology. Librarians have a tendency to be neophiliacs; they adopt a new technology or a new system merely because it is new. Librarians must be more discerning and must exclude political ideology from their library management operations. Many librarians are enthusiastic about the still unproven Alt-Metrics just because it is new. Librarians’ analyses of novel solutions tend to be
gushing rather than critical…

The Research Meeting today

Thanks to all who attended

( I was relieved when so many came…) Kate and Deirdre are engaged in some very interesting research that has ramifications for many of us (earthquakes and sea level rise).

I had not realized the political context of their science research! After listening to their experiences I look forward to placing greater emphasis on students finding high quality references rather than just anything at all

Cheers AJ

There will be a second speaker at the Research Team Meeting Friday 23rd June

Deirdre Hart, a coastal geographer, will also be speaking. She has been involved in documenting the changes to the coast around Christchurch and the increased risk of flooding  after the earthquakes. She is also insistent that students use our databases rather than Google.

Do take this opportunity to learn how academics at UC carry out their research !

Research Team meeting: you are welcome to attend

The Research Team is having an informal seminar on Friday 23 June at 10.30am – and you are invited to attend  ( but the room will only fit 20)

Kate Pedley from the Department of Geological Sciences will be helping us understand how researchers gather data to document the effects of the Kaikoura earthquake. Her photos  of the ruptures were published around the world

Kate has also had experience documenting  the effects of the Darfield Earthquake.

This session will be held on level 2 of the EPS library in room 1 and 2. Morning tea will be provided
