Vinyl printer workshop tomorrow 12pm

If any staff would like to learn how to use the new Roland Vinyl Printer/Cutter machine, the Te Rua Makerspace is hosting a session tomorrow (Wednesday) from 12-1:30pm. We will be exploring the printer and heat press, so come along with an image and we can help you turn it into a t-shirt or sticker (BYO t-shirt)

Just look how happy Jack is with his new t-shirt – you could be too! Registration required – please click here: https://canterbury.libcal.com/event/5291707

Lego train track event in the library on Sunday

This Sunday the Te Rua makerspace library staff, in conjunction with Dr Christoph Bartneck from the HIT LAB, are hosting an event to try and and break the “NZ national record” for the longest Lego train track. If you or someone you know own any Lego train tracks – we need you! Please come and join us for a fun event on Sunday afternoon, as we build a fun track that weaves in and out of the makerspace and around the level 2 library floor. Plus, we will film it on a special 360 degree panoramic camera and post it on YouTube. All welcome – see you there! 🚂

Te Rua Makerspace Beeswax Wrap workshop a hit with students!

The Te Rua Makerspace in the central library ran a successful Beeswax Wrap making workshop last Wednesday afternoon in conjunction with UC Sustainability. We had well over a hundred people pass through the doors and the feedback we received was overwhelming positive. A great initiative and excellent promotion for the new Makerspace. Watch a video of the event here:

Would you like to run a workshop in the Library Makerspace during semester 2?

Calling all closet crafters, makers and tinkerers!

I am currently planning the programme of events for the Te Rua Makerspace during semester 2. Many of you have helped run workshops in the past (felted slippers, sewing projects, cartooning etc). Would you like to run them again? Or something new?

We’ve got lots of supplies at the moment and can facilitate most projects. It’s always fun and only runs for 1-2 hours max.

I’m currenty developing 3D printing, Intro to video production, Stop Motion Animation type projects, and any low tech craft, art or jewelery ideas would be especially welcome.

If you would like to run an activity, or want to discuss an idea please get in touch with me know ASAP.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you!

Andy Johnson Introduction

Kia ora koutou. I thought I would formally introduce myself to those of you who I haven’t met yet. I hope you are doing well and I look forward to meeting you in person soon! I’m the new Te Rua Makerspace Facilitator, and I started the role 2 days before we went into lockdown, so there’s alot I’m trying to get my head around!

My background is in film production, working as a freelance editor, producer and camera operator in China and Europe. Prior to UC I taught  animation and design at Hagley College. Here I worked alongside Gavin Hewitt who many of you will know from the work he did last year in the Makerspace.

My skillset is varied and includes video and film production and I have been busy trying to create video content for the Makerspace page which you can check out here.

The only camera I have access to right now is my iphone so please excuse the quality! Right now I’m looking at how I can offer a quality online service until we are able to get back into the physical space. Any suggestions or ideas welcome. In the meantime please feel free to get in touch with anything makerspace related.
