Article level metrics (ALM) are a set of tools for measuring the importance of a scholarly article in the 21st century. SPARC have put together a quick primer about how they are measured, and how they complement traditional impact/h index/eigen factors.

We simply can’t ignore the profile of an article that has become very newsworthy or taken off in social media. The primer has a good list of pros and cons for considering various (and changing) inputs.
