The Large Book Collection at Central, previously housed on Level 6 and then briefly on Level 4, has now been interfiled with the main LC collection in call number order. Occasionally, some particularly large books may be on the bottom shelf of a bay if there was insufficent space on the shelf.

Changes to ULANZ and Proxy Borrower Registration Processes
As of today, there have been two changes to the process for registering ULANZ/CTA and Proxy Borrowers:
Proxy Borrowers
As covered in the training session, proxy borrowers can now apply at any library. Information about the process, including a link to the relevant form is available on the wiki:
http://wiki.canterbury.ac.nz/display/LIBRSTAFF/Proxy+borrowing+definition+and+set+up
The library webpage has also been updated: http://library.canterbury.ac.nz/services/lending/proxy.shtml
ULANZ Registration
As covered in the training session, ULANZ borrowers now need to read a privacy statement before we can submit their ULANZ/CTA registration. Laminated copies of the Privacy Statement have been sent to each library for use when registering borrowers. Once the borrower has read the statement, staff check the box stating that the borrower has been made aware of the terms and conditions and submit the form as usual.
Information about the process, including a link to the Privacy Statement is available on the wiki:
http://wiki.canterbury.ac.nz/display/LIBRSTAFF/ULANZ+CTA+record+creation
The ULANZ webpages have also been updated: http://library.canterbury.ac.nz/services/reciprocal.shtml
If you have questions or have any problems with the new process, please contact me.
Thanks
Purple, Yellow and Orange
I just clarified the meaning of the orange cards with LSS staff as at Central we’ve been a bit bemused by new books with orange cards that don’t have requests on them. Thought I should share the following info:
Purple – new books to go on new display (therefore unborrowable for a week)
Yellow – new books to go on High Demand (will usually have course number written on top of card)
Orange – new books marked to LSS staff as urgent additions to collection. These may have a request but sometimes do not. (should go straight onto shelves if they don’t have a request on them)
SD Session – Library Membership
As part of the staff development programme, a session on Library Membership is offered on:
Thursday 9 May 11-12pm (Room 210, Central Library)
Tuesday 14 May 2-3pm (The Den, Central Library)
Sandra and I will cover:
ULANZ
Proxy Borrowing
Staff Library Accounts
External Borrowers (eg. members of the public and people from institutions with formal associations with the university).
Please let me know via email if you will be attending, identifying which session.
Thanks, Fiona
Errors with High Demand Items
There have been some problems over the weekend with High Demand items returned through the Smart Bin being placed on imaginary holds (ie According to Horizon their status is ‘on hold’ but there is no borrower attached to the hold). These items are flagged on both the Sort Assist and Horizon with error messages. The problem is the hold cannot be cancelled and the book cannot be issued or returned on Horizon.
E-Services have restarted the SIP connection to the Smart Bin which *should* have resolved this issue.
If you find any more items producing error messages, please put book aside and send the book details to E-services so it can be fixed.
Thanks,
Fiona
Print Job Errors In Central Library – Lvl 3
Hi all,
The student pcs on Level 3 of the Central Library have been defaulting to a staff printer in the Learning Skills Centre. This has now been fixed by ICTS. If you get students at the desk querying being charged for print jobs they couldn’t find, please refer them to the ICTS desk. Shona von Ee has said she will let her staff know to refund jobs that went to the Learning Skills Printer.
Cheers, Fiona
Fiction Page Update
We have a display in the Central LIbrary of fiction and have updated the fiction page on the website too.
This semester the theme is ‘New Fiction’ and features Central books. Ideas for future themes are welcome!
Self-Check Machine on Level 4 of Central Library
In addition to the two self check machines in the Self Loan Area and two in the Express Zone on Level 2 in the Central Library, there is now a self check machine on Level 4. It is situated by the PAC adjacent to the West Lifts.
External Membership – Photo ID
Just a reminder that we are currently accepting photo id at the desk to issue items to external borrowers registered in December and January. These borrowers are not able to get cards at the Security Office.
New Collection Location Guide for Central Library
A guide has been produced for locating the various collections in the Central Library now that the Law & Commerce Collection has been relocated. It can be found here on the K drive:
