As usually happens each year, we are putting a hold on registering external borrowers from Monday February 11 (this Monday) to Thursday February 28. This is mainly because of the pressures on the Canterbury Card Office with the beginning of the new academic year. I have arranged for the library webpage to be updated to advise potential applicants. Please advise any potential borrowers at the desk that we are unable to register them as borrower until after the peak enrolment period, but that they are welcome to browse the collection.
Due to the problems we’ve had with producing cards for external borrowers, we are introducing a new process this year that is more streamlined and will enable external borrowers to register at any time. I am hoping this will be ready to go by February 28. Training will be organised shortly.
With the return from storage of the collections housed on Level 4 of the Central Library, library staff are currently unable to access some areas of the collection until they are unpacked and this is taking longer than expected.
A notice will be put on Library News alerting borrowers to potential delays and asking them to contact the Central Library if they have urgent requests.
If you get queries at the desk, please ask borrower to email the Central Library (or email on their behalf). What’s accessible changes daily, so staff here will work to find the books and communicate with the borrowers as necessary.
Peter K has adjusted the MARC Media Format parameters on the “Encode Tag” function so that they include microforms. Note that microforms are not a separate format, but are included in either the books or serials format. So when encoding microforms you needs to either encode the tag as a book or serial.
He has also added two other formats that can be used:
Maps & Other Cartographic Material
Posters, paintings, drawings etc.
Please restart the “Sort Assist” software to ensure this update takes effect.
The instructions on the wiki have been updated to include this info.
IT discovered this morning that students and staff are currently unable to download Endnote. IT are working on fixing this. (This only affects downloads, not students or staff who already have Endnote downloaded)
Students are currently unable to access non-UC webpages. IT is aware of the issue and working on a fix but do not have timeframe for when it will be fixed.
“Through Amateur Eyes: Film and Photography in Nazi Germany” by Frances Guerin (TR 73 .G84) is a new book that Central staff have been unable to find anywhere.
Can everyone please keep an eye out for this book – perhaps it is lingering on a hold shelf or in a hamper somewhere.
There has been a glitch with Canterbury Card production which is affecting new external borrowers. Their library account will still work fine – they just can’t get a card. Please accept photo identification for new borrowers who report that they were unable to get a card at the office (e.g. driver’s license/passport) and issue items to them at the desk.
