Some former students may wish to submit their thesis electronically but no longer have a username and password. Here’s some information from Peter Kennedy:
The digital thesis upload link requires students to login – this is just to prevent others playing, but doesn’t serve any other role. Two groups of students cannot use this link.
The first group comprise those former students that no longer have a login, but need to deposit a current thesis. We email out to them this link which does not require a login:
The second group comprises those depositing a thesis retrospectively. We send them out this link:
which is a simpler form because they completed most of the documentation at the time they submitted their original print thesis.
In all cases we will also accept theses on CDs although we would normally ask them for additional details, namely Supervisor, email address, and keywords – the rest should be available from the thesis itself.
If you have students with problems accessing PsycInfo, check whether they are accessing the database via Blackboard. If so, advise them to access via the Library web-site. The Blackboard link has not had ezyproxy added. Kerry is following up with the Psyc Dept.
Just a reminder that if you are busy too busy at the Help Desk to answer the phone, let it ring and after five rings it will revert to the Information Services Office. The Info Services office phone number is ext.8657.
There have been a few questions asked lately about the rules for re-setting a Library PIN. I am aware of a number of misunderstandings.
An important principle is that you must have clear identification for the person who is requesting that a PIN be reset. Access to a borrower’s record online should only be enabled for the ‘owner’ of that record and protected by the PIN. You may reset the PIN for a borrower:
1) Face to face – the borrower should present their current card and you should check the photo with the person in front of you. This is the first choice.
2) Email from a borrower’s personal account i.e. the email signature or address should clearly identify who is making the request. This should only be offered if they cannot easily come in person.
3) Phone – distance students only. Education Library staff have protocols for ensuring they know the identity of the person phoning.
DO NOT reset the PIN:
1) Phone call from anyone other than a distance student. Request them to come in person to a library service desk.
2) Asklive session – similar scenario to a phone call. Request them to come in person to a library service desk.
Library staff are well aware that we protect the privacy of borrowers who have items out – we never divulge their names to others. Please make sure staff understand that security and privacy of borrowers online records is equally important.
There is an intermittent problem with ABM which has been continuing since last week. When you do a search, most or all of the results appear as follows:
1. There appears to be a discrepancy between the index and physical data for this record.
The file containing this record is missing.
2. There appears to be a discrepancy between the index and physical data for this record.
The file containing this record is missing., etc.
22 international students have had their university (including library) services cancelled today because of their failure to collect their visas from the Registry. Failure to collect the visa means these students are not legally in NZ and may have their enrolements cancelled by Immigration. Each of the 22 students has an Alert Block on their record ” Services cancelled, visa expired. See Diana Horne, Registry 9am-12pm hd” and their record has been expired. Please do NOT CKO or renew anything until this block has been removed by me.
Send them to see Diana Horne as they have already been repeatedly reminded.
Fill the stapler with long unbroken rows of staples. Discard any little pieces. Small runs of staples can lead to the stapler jamming. It is easier to throw away a few staples than to perform surgery on the stapler.
Alteration to New Books Display process to accommodate the Easter break.
The current New Book display will be taken down on Wednesday 4 April (to allow borrowers to collect Holds on the Thursday, before we close for the long weekend).
The next display will be set up on Wednesday 4 April, and will stay in place until Thursday 12 April.
