COMS 101 library exercise

Within the next two weeks some COMS 101 students may ask for help with a compulsory library exercise. There are 240 enrolled. The exercise was prepared by me, and I tried to make it clear enough for them to follow unaided, but some will probably need help anyway. It is designed to familiarise them with finding library resources beyond the course reading list, using the COMS portal, the catalogue, and on the level 4 and reference collection shelves. They have to find and cite a chapter in an edited book and a journal article, following the Harvard author-date style as linked on the COMS portal under Citation Guides.

School journal abbreviation: SW

Hi,
School journals are a hot topic at the moment. An abbreviation from Journalsurf not listed in the index is SW.
This stands for Journal of Secondary Students’ Writing. You can search for this by alphabetical title, but not series. There are some at the very end of the School journal sequence (bottom right shelf as you enter the School journal Room) but we only have one copy of the most common one.
It is “This other place”, containing the story “Bird in the Hand” by Anita Bush. (I have been asked for this 3 times now).
Currently, our NZEC copy is on Jane’s desk while others are ordered.

Health and Physical Education : the curriculum in action

There is now a set of seven departmental copies placed in 3 hour loan under HEA. I have also included in the box a list of all the Health and Physical Education booklets we own and where they currently are shelved (mostly LC now). Please encourage the students to do a “Series begins with” search under “Health and Physical” to pick up all the titles in the series. SMc

Mopier toner

Marilyn has provided a spare toner cartridge for the Den mopier (size 70A) in case the automatic email doesn’t reach her in time. It will be kept under the Help Desk. At the current rate of usage a new toner cartridge may be required every 3-4 weeks, so please take the time to familiarize yourself with the very simple installation procedure.
