E-books training session postponed
We have decided to postpone the e-books training session that was to be held tomorrow at 11am because of the Project Star meetings that are scheduled tomorrow. Apologies for any inconvenience. We will advise a new date and time as soon as we are able. Tim Stedman
Farewell from Violeta
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
It is with mixed emotions that I send this email.
As most of you know, my family is going to stay in Melbourne for at least another year and I resigned from my position in the library.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to all my colleagues and friends. I have enjoyed my time at the UC and in the library. It has been a great pleasure working with you!
Thank you for your support over the years.
Best wishes to you all! Have a safe and enjoyable Christmas break!
Sincerely,
Violeta Milenkovic
For staff involved in making weeding decisions
If you would like some way of flagging items (monographs or serials) that should be retained and should not be weeded in the future, you can now flag these by filling in an online form with the details. Collection Services will be making use of the 901 tag in the MARC record for this purpose. The report used to change an item to weed will now prevent you from weeding a monograph item with a 901 tag. For serials a different procedure is used. Thanks to Library IT for enabling this. Tim Stedman
Resignation
Sadly I have received a notice of resignation from Violeta Milenkovic, effective 2 November 2009. Violeta and her family are planning to stay in Melbourne as Violeta’s husband has been offered an extension to his contract. Violeta plans to contact a number of her friends and colleagues in the Library to say farewell herself, but I’m sure you will join with me in wishing Violeta all the best for whatever the future holds. Serials Solutions 360 Search
Serials Solutions advise they are planning some changes to 360 Search later this year which they are describing as “new and improved”. They will be integrating some of the features of WebFeat (another federated search system). At this stage my understanding is the user interface will remain much the same / based on the 360 Search interface but there will be some improvements and there will be changes to the administration side of things. More information. Tim S
360 Search – Full-text and Peer-reviewed limits
Serials Solutions have been doing some work improving the filters for the full-text and peer-reviewed limits on 360 Search. Both of these features were problematic in the past. I have asked Serials Solutions to turn these on for us so we can try them out. The changes should be going live today. It would be good if people try these features out again and post any comments here as to how you find it. Tim Stedman
Recent conference handbooks
I would like to briefly borrow any recent library conference handbooks. Examples include LIANZA 2005, 2006 & 2007; VALA 2006 & 2008, Information Online 2007 and any other recent major Australasian library conferences. Preferably including a listing of exhibitors. Please contact me if you can assist. Thanks, Tim Stedman
Supplies of barcodes, book tape, book labels, spine labels and tattle tape of all descriptions
Stocks of the above that have been stored in and administered by Collection Services are now stored in and administered by Library Administration. Other library departments who have sourced their supplies from Collection Services will now need to ask for these at Library Administration. Tim Stedman
Fixed term Library Assistant Appointment
I am very pleased to announce that Rachel Goggin has accepted the fixed term Library Assistant position in the Collection Services Central Team (vacated by Violeta Milenkovic for the next 11 months). Rachel is currently working in the Education Library cataloguing historic textbooks. Rachel will take up her appointment on Monday 1st December. We look forward to welcoming her to the team. Tim S
