Isabel has discovered a problem with the pickup location in HIP since the recent upgrade. Distance borrowers are now being presented with multiple pickup locations when requesting certain items (e.g. Education journals and 3 day loans), instead of having the Education Library selected for them. The request rules still apply, and it will not allow the borrower to place a request for non-requestable items. There are no problems when requesting standard borrowable items.
If a borrower reports that they are having problems, please explain that journals are not available for loan to distance borrowers, but offer to scan an article(s) for them. Alternatively if they’re trying to place a request on an Education 3 day loan, ask them to select “Education” as the pickup location.
We’ll try to fix this problem ASAP.

We are planning to implement the changes to the catalogue today (see Proposed changes to HIP).
This means that we’ll have to restart the catalogue around 2.30pm today. It shouldn’t be down for more than a couple of minutes.

Library IT have implemented some of the changes recommended by the Catalogue Review and Catalogue Replacement projects in a test catalogue:
These recommendations were the result of research conducted by the project groups which suggested that users preferred more information at the summary level, and clearer links to online full-text. There were many more recommendations, some of which we wouldn’t be able to implement without moving to a new catalogue.
Please have a look at the proposed changes and add your feedback to this post via comments.
Thanks,
Donna
Please note that Boolean operators must now be entered in capital letters in HIP search queries.
e.g. (youth OR juvenile) AND crime
Thanks to Janette for noticing this change.
Please make sure that all training notes are updated to reflect this change, and notify Library IT if you find any examples that need to be updated on the Web.
Thanks,
Donna
The recent Horizon upgrade has added a new feature allowing staff users to change their own passwords.
To modify your password, log into your Horizon account and choose Change Password from the File menu. Enter your old password followed by your new one.
If you forget your password, you can still contact Library IT and ask us to reset it for you.
Library IT would like some feedback from staff about any demand for Horizon refresher training. This might be of use to those staff members who need to know how to use specific Horizon functions, but they don’t use them on a day-to-day basis.
So, if you would like some training on specific Horizon features, please email Library IT or add a comment to this post, telling us what you’d like to know. If there’s enough demand, we’ll try to organise a session soon.

Horizon will be down from around 7am on Thursday morning. Lending should have access to Horizon by 9am, HIP should be accessible soon afterwards, and cataloguers should have access by 11am. We’ll keep everyone informed of progress on the day.
Please note that we will be shutting down the self-check machines in Central and Education on Wednesday afternoon.
If any libraries would like to use PC reliance for circulation, please email Library IT.
We are doing some reindexing which has occassionally been causing Horizon to crash. If this happens, it will usually be around 28 minutes past the hour and 55 minutes past the hour.
We’ll keep an eye on it and try to minimise the disruption.

We’ve just been informed by ICTS that the student servers are being moved today, so students won’t be able to login. It may be necessary to put notices up around computers to inform students.
I’ll post a comment if I find out when access will be restored.
