The Orientation Project Group are working on a number of activities for the first 2 weeks of Semester next year. The main activities are:
• Library Treasure Hunt – this is an alternative to the library tours and has been designed to help students get familiar with the Library. The Treasure Hunt will be available online and in print – it can be completed in any library. Students can get together a group (up to 4) or chose to do it on their own. We have a number of prizes we’ll be giving away including book and movie vouchers. We’ll send out a link to the online version in the New Year
• Twitter competition – we’re going to run another competition at the start of the year to promote our twitter account – something along the lines of ‘tweet us your favourite place to study in the library’
• Tours – students can still opt to do a traditional tour. These will be shorter (we’re hoping around 15 mins) and if students opt to do this they will also go in the draw for the prizes above .. they’ll also be given a small bags of lollies.. hopefully library staff won’t eat them beforehand :)
• Exhibitions – each library will have a display designed to appeal to new students. eg, in EPS we’ve got photos from the Undie 500 and in Education we’re going to have a display of old children’s literature books
• Library Tower Race – this is being relaunched and is being organised by staff from the library, the gym and marketing.
There are other activities going on to help us prepare for the start of Semester.
• The Top Tips webpage is being updated and a new Top Tips video is being produced.
• The Marketing Team have created a Library Guide (this is replacing the bookmark & hours pamphlet we used this year) – it’s going to be dropped off to all the Halls of Residence and will also be available in all libraries.
Events will be advertised in the O-Mag, on Facebook and Twitter. If you have other ideas for promoting these events, please feel free to let us know.
You might have spotted the LibGuide, ‘I would like to read..’ which contains 5 items recommended by a staff member each month. http://library.canterbury.ac.nz/blogs/index.php?itemid=16913
It was the brainchild of Alison J and the Marketing Team and is promoted on Library News, Facebook and our Twitter account. The idea is each month we will have 5 recommendations – they might be new books, old books, DVDs, children’s books, holiday reading or anything at all. The only requirement is that they are in our collection.
If you would like to contribute to this project we would be very grateful! Please get in touch with either Alison or me.
Today is the last day of the Twitter competition. We had a good response and increased the number of Library followers from around 40 to 127. We still have 2 vouchers left and these will be given to the best photos of the library posted by UC students – they have until Thursday next week to post a photo. Fingers crossed we get some photos.

A project group has been created to coordinate library activities for Orientation 2014. Members of the group include: Coral, Cuiying, Fiona Tyson, Lisa, Nick, Nicola and me. Currently we’re after ideas for a theme. If you have any suggestions we’d love to hear them.

The Marketing Group are relaunching Deborah’s ‘Friday Free Stuff’ and are also starting a new column of ‘Staff Picks’ – books/DVDs etc from the collection. We’d love to get suggestions from you of cool websites and great reads – these will be posted on Library News. If you’ve read a book from the library that you enjoyed we would be super grateful if you could write a few words about it – doesn’t have to be an essay.
If you have anything to contribute please send items to Margaret Paterson 🙂
A technician from Ricoh is visiting around 1pm on Friday to install a new printer in the research room. The new printer won’t be available for use by students until Monday – in the meantime students will be able to print to the current printer.

Peter came over yesterday afternoon and the selfcheck machine is now working. (thanks Peter)
Keys are in the key cupboard (key number 30). Replacement paper is just inside the door of the IT services room off the main workroom.
