Camelot on wiki

We are now at the stage where over half of Camelot is on the wiki. As the old Camelot pages are not being updated this is causing some confusion so we want to move over to the wiki version. We will be continue changing over the top pages next week. Later in the week we will change the Camelot icon on the desktops. If you use a shortcut please delete the old one and create a new one to the wiki.

If you see any problems on wiki pages feel free to fix them or report them to Library IT.

Thanks, Anne

Camelot

The minutes of meetings have now been converted to the wiki. It is now the responsibility of the meeting chair to ensure that the minutes are placed in the appropriate directory in K:\meetings_and _minutes and linked on the Camelot wiki. If you need some training on how to do this, please contact Library IT or Carole. Only the last two years are kept on the wiki, older minutes can be found on K:

Older areas of Camelot will start to be deleted this week. This will break some links. Feel free to fix these on the wiki. Please report problems to Library IT, but we are unlike to fix broken links in the old Camelot unless they are regularly used and for some reason we cannot convert them yet. Cheers, Anne

Camelot conversion to wiki

The Camelot conversion to a wiki continues. We are at the difficult stage where we need to remove the old material that has already been updated in the wiki but if we do this some links will break in the old Camelot pages. The situation is changing on a daily basis so finding the relevant links and keeping them updated on the old pages takes a lot of staff time which is better spent continuing with the conversion. I am proposing next week to begin deleting completed sections (eg IT Help pages) from the old Camelot. If you find a broken link in an unconverted Camelot page go to the wiki and search for the information that you need, or alternatively feel free to convert that page. If there are comments opposed to this method then we may reconsider. Cheers Anne

Network port upgrades to 100Mb

Over the last few weeks Library IT has been working with ICTS to upgrade all Library network connections to 100Mb. At the same time we have removed most of the unused connections as these can be traded in for an upgrade of another port and so has saved the Library money. All the branches except Central are now complete and Central should be done in the coming week. There is a small possibility that this could create some problems particularly if you want to reuse a port that has not be used for the last 6 months. In that case we will need to repurchase the connection. Please report any issues to Library IT. Cheers, Anne

Camelot conversion to a wiki – Progress

We are starting to make good progress on the conversion of Camelot to a wiki. All the static html Camelot pages will be converted this year. Once a page is in the wiki any staff member will be able to update content although it would be good practice to consult before you make a large change. Dreamweaver is not required to edit content in the wiki.

As with all changes we are learning as we go how best to do things

– Avoid duplicating content on the wiki, link to the most appropriate page instead. If the original needs a small change for your branch then add it in. If the page has not been converted, email Library IT. You can link to a Camelot file. We can fix these links later.

– Library IT are creating the top pages in the wiki. If a link appears in red then that section has not yet been converted.

– Be careful naming pages as that name can only be used once in the wiki. If someone did a search would they expect that page based on that title.

– Library IT are still working on some of the branding and navigation issues. In general wikis tend to have less navigation than static websites as they are less hierarchical to start with.

– If you are unable to access the Camelot wiki pages, please email Library IT

Printing in L5 Training Room

The printer in the L5 Training Room is a hot spare for the Loft and belongs to ICTS. The printing levels are very low and the printer is old and costly to run. When the Loft printers are replaced by Ricoh, this printer will be retired. Anyone using the L5 Training Room PCs will need to go to the Loft to pick up their printing or chose another place to print. An item will be put on Counterculture when this happens.

Student internet quotas

From ICTS
Undergraduate Internet Allowances
As previously informed; on Monday 23 February all enrolled Undergraduate Students received a free 200Mb Internet allowance. This will be repeated at the start of Semester 2.

Postgraduate Internet Allowances
New this year; all Postgraduates will receive a free 2GB Internet allowance per month. The first 2GB monthly allowance has been activated today, Wednesday 4 March 2009. The monthly allowance will be renewed each month.

Students can see this shown as an Internet Allowance when they check their Account Details using My IT Account online:
https://ras.canterbury.ac.nz.

Postgraduate Disc Quota
New this year; the default disc quota (p: drive space) for Postgraduates has been increased from 200MB to 500MB for all new and existing postgraduates.

This will be advertised on the ICTS website and Postgraduates will receive an email about the new services soon. Please direct any questions to the ICT Service Desk.

Thank you.

Some issues

Terminology
BLT and a number of individuals have raised issues with inconsistent or confusing terminology. Please use the following:
My Library Account – for the catalogue My Account in line with My IT Account
Courtesy notices – for pre-overdue notices (we cant change this in Horizon)
Subject Guides – please stop using the term LibGuides

Printing charges changes
ICTS are not yet ready to change the printing charges to 7c. This is partly to do with problems with the new accounting system and partly because their printers have not yet all been replaced by Ricoh printers. I will let you know when ICTS have set a date for this change.

EFTPOS workstations
These will be upgraded over the next week or two, as the new test unit at the Copy Centre is working well.

PAC machines
Central Library PACs will soon become standard will all the other PACs in branches. This will allow access to Subject Guides. Also Blackboard will become available on all PACs (approved by BLT)
