More on Recycling

There are some issues getting the recycling bins emptied by cleaners in both Central and Law that we are working on with Kate.

Some staff have also noticed that the recycling is going into a single bag on the recycling truck when it is picked up and have wondered if all the effort was being undone at that point so here is Kate’s reply:

Fair not, Peter (the rubbish truck person) is sorting the bags out here at FM yard, where we have collection wheelie bins for food waste and glass/plastics/cans. We do have plans for a slightly different collection vehicle in future which will more easily keep waste types separate. In the mean time, as food and g/p/cans volumes increase as more buildings are switched over, Pete is going to start carrying wheelie bins in the truck to put the items straight into (I talked with him this morning and I think he’s going to start doing that from today).

You’ll also start to notice in some of the waste collection points, particularly the ones in loading bays, including Engineering and Central libraries, that a lidded green bin will be placed there specifically for cleaners to put food waste into, to make it quicker for Pete to pick items up and to protect the food bags from any hungry animals!

Recycling in Central Library — Sunday

The new recycling process will be introduced into the Central Library on Sunday. The current rubbish bins will be replaced by the new recycling stacks (examples in staff room). For staff, each desk will get an ice cream sized container that staff will need to empty into the nearest recycle stack which will be either close by in an open user area or in the Staff Room.

The maroon paper recycle trays will continue to be emptied by Library staff into the large maroon bins rather than by the cleaners. Cardboard and other large items will continue to be recycled by existing methods. Any remaining Maroon bins in user areas near photocopiers or printers will also need to be emptied by Library staff, but they can be replaced by larger grey bins that the cleaners will empty.

Level 1 and Level 5 will get a bag to recycle courier bags.

There will be a battery recycle box on L3 and in Library IT

Staff may take home their rubbish bins tonight if they wish.

Kate Hewson is happy to make changes as we get some experience with the change. We have made our best guess on what is needed, but have not been able to consult with all staff. Kate will talk to the cleaners and the Library next week. Please report any problems to Tim O’Sullivan, me or you can go directly to Kate.

Comments welcome
Thanks, Anne

Proposed new lift in Central Library

For some years the Central Library has been asking for a lift suitable for users with disabilities, so that they could use the normal Library entrance rather than the staff lift. This will improve the service for disabled users as they will not longer have to make special arrangements to get access, and it will also improve security in the Library.

Peter Molony, Facilities Management, and Nick Courtney, Courtney Architects provided a plan of the proposed new lift to Gail this week. The proposed lift will be built in part of the Restricted Loans staff area. Users will enter in the lobby near to Security by the stairs and exit near the Library entrance. The lift mechanisms will be underneath the lift so the Attic will not be affected. The work is expected to commence after Show Weekend and it will be noisy as a big hole will need to be dug. It is expected that the lift will be operational some time after the start of Semester 1. It is also proposed that Disability Support will move into the old Bindery area.

The construction will affect staff located in the area and working on the desk. There will be discussions with the staff affected on the best ways to minimise the disruption but, as staff working in Engineering know, building contruction is noisy and dusty.

Nick Courtney will be contacting Janette Nicolle soon to develop some proposals for the reorganisation of Level 2 based on the work of the One Desk Project. While the lift proposal is separate, it will need to be taken into account in any proposed solutions.

I am aware that staff have concerns about the affect of the proposed lift construction both on their working area and for the service they provide to users. Please feel free to discuss this with me at any time.

Major outage now Saturday 23 August 8am -1pm

Almost all university computer access will be unavailable on Saturday Aug from 8.00am. This includes almost all student and staff services. ICTS anticipate that most services will be back by 11.00am barring unforeseen circumstances, but some services will not be available until 1.00pm.

At the same time the switchboard at the College of Education will be repaired. The power will be going on and off at different periods in varous CoEd buildings from 8.00am – 1.00pm. The Education Library will remain open as emergency services such as firealarms will be on battery backup.

Horizon, the catalogue, access to databases and the Library Web will not be affected, but it may be difficult to login to get to them on campus. Lin from Library IT will come in to get some of the branches Lending desk PCs working. Priority will be given to Education (as it is term time) and Central then other branches.

ICTS will provide a Helpdesk person in the Central Library from 10.00am to 1.00pm. If there are problems they will stay later. This will be confirmed closer to the time.

Digital Library and UC Research Repository will not be available during this time. The Digital Library server will be upgraded while everything is down and will be one of the later machines to be restored.

This work is part of the changes required to move to the new Data Centre and to repair the problems in the College of Education switchboard that created the last power outage.

Please watch the comments for further information.

3 Day loan and Central Selfcheck

We have been looking at ways to increase the use of the Central Library Selfcheck.

It has been decided to do the following:

1. Allow 3 day loan items to be issued via the selfcheck machine

2. Victoria will review any material she has particular concerns about, and move them to hourly loan. This is already current practice.

3. At the end of the semester an inventory will be done to identify the number of missing items and compare this to previous inventories. This will allow us to review our practices.

This will significantly increase the number of potential issues that can be handled by the selfcheck.

The original decision to exclude the 3 day books was based on a genuine concern that it is possible to fool the machine into desensitizing more than one book at a time. In fact this could already be done in some cirumstances if the top book was not 3 day loan so excluding them was not effective.

Please encourage users, when approriate, to use the Selfcheck.

Feel free to make comments on this change.
