Te Puna Forum and Pat Losinski

Over 40 librarians will be here Thursday for the Te Puna Forum which will be held in Room 101 in the Undercroft from 9.00-1.00pm. The forum will be looking at the future direction of Te Puna as a consortia and service as National Library look to replace Voyager as their library management system.

There will be an informal session at 2pm in Central Library 210 chaired by Anne Anderson with one of the international guests, Pat Losinski. This session will probably be of most interest to public libraries, but anyone if free to go to the session (ask your manager).

Pat Losinski
Since 2002 Pat Losinski has served as Chief Executive Officer of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, a twenty-one branch library district serving 820,000 residents in central Ohio. CML is one of the most used public library systems in the United States. Pat is interested in how libraries influence their communities, especially in an environment which is digital, and has been an active campaigner for better access to e-books in the USA.

Prior to joining CML Pat spent five years as executive director of Pikes Peak Library District in Colorado Springs and has been a library director at two other public library systems in Illinois and Ohio, serving on the state library board in each state. He has received a number of awards and was named a “Superstar” in the General Management category by Columbus CEO magazine in 2012.

Cheers, Anne

2014 purchasing

LSS have now started purchasing for 2014 as the budget roll-over is complete. Please ensure that any material required for the start of semester is ordered as soon as possible.
The information resources budget for 2014 is expected to stay the same at $5.9M. Currently the book allocations are interim until the February Library Committee meeting. These allocations are normally updated again in May when the EFTS are clearer. There are some changes to fund codes to reflect changes in the College of Arts.We are implementing new selection procedures in late January in GOBI, however email recommendations are always welcome. Regards Anne.

New website and catalogue machines

The navigation in the new website is not working in the old version of Firefox on the Library standalone catalogue machines. On these machines Firefox does not work with any UC site with the new branding. Peter Kennedy is contacting ICTS to get this fixed. Ask people to use IE on these machines as it does work.

If people report that the arrows in the navigation are not working get them to reload the page. They may need to do this twice for it to work. When it is fixed once, it should not need to be done again.

If this does not work, please report it to Library E-Services.

Thanks
Anne

Website Review Project

The Website Review Project Group has been setup and is looking at ways of improving the Library website. The project plan and other documentation is available in K://projects/website_review_2013. If you wish to contribute to this project please discuss your ideas with a member of the group,Coral Black, Romy Forrer, Isabel Milward, Lisa Matthews, Janette Nicolle, Antoine Monti, Bronwyn Matthews, Alison Johnston, and Zuzana Kratochvilova. The actual implementation will happen in stages which will be determined once we get to the implementation phase. Anne

EEBO

There is a proposal out for consultation to remove the 109,000 EEBO (Early English Books Online) records from the catalogue. Instead access will be through Multi-Search and Serials Solutions. This provides access to 124,000 records, increased metadata providing better searching and much faster access to new books added to the collection. Access to the records through Serials Solutions is free rather than having to purchase the MARC records on top of the subscription costs. EBBO is around 10% of the records in Horizon so it also affects Horizon maintenance costs. If there are no substantial response from academics the records will be removed on 1 Feb 2013.

At the same time, as it will require a complete reindex of Horizon, this is a very good time to have a tidy up including cleaning up and removed any unwanted collection codes or item statuses from Horizon before the reindex as normally this is only done once or twice a year. Thanks Anne

Ann Ready

It is with deep sadness I share the news that Ann Ready died peacefully Monday afternoon.

Her funeral is on Friday at 2pm in Oxford.

Ann worked for the UC Library for a number of years in various capacities. Her last position was in the EPS Library before joining Christchurch City Libraries as Content Manager. She was a great colleague with a passion for customer services. As an example Ann and Jill were instrumental in the setup of AskLive and managed the service across the Library for some time.

Ann was a very nice person and will be greatly missed by her family, friends and colleagues.

Information Resources Policy

A group consisting of Jill, Alison M, Peter L, Tim and Anne have created a new draft Information Resources Policy (with a lot of help from the VUW Library’s policy). This has been to the Library Managers meeting for a first look but is still draft. Comments and suggested changes are most welcome. It will also be discussed in various library meetings. It will then go back to the next Libary Managers Meeting on 2nd October, then to Alex, then to Libary Committee around 14 October for the meeting on 21 October. Hopefully after that we will have the final version.
