OCLC Training Sessions

OCLC and the National Library of New Zealand are sponsoring a series of web seminars for OCLC Cataloguing and Reference Services topics. The sessions are mainly for cataloguers using OCLC Connexion. However, one session is available for FirstSearch and reference and may be of interest to Information Librarians.

Searching WorldCat in FirstSearch and WorldCat.org
Description:
The FirstSearch platform is the interface upon which two of OCLC’s major gateways into the WorldCat database rest: the FirstSearch reference service and the WorldCat Resource Sharing (WCRS) service. Since the searching capabilities for these two services overlap, this class seeks to give participants the necessary skills to conduct successful searches for items in WorldCat via either service on the FirstSearch platform.

Audience:
This course is intended for both reference staff engaged in research and compiling bibliographies on behalf of their patrons or for themselves, as well as ILL librarians and staff who need to accurately match their borrowing and lending requests to items available in WorldCat.

Sessions:
Friday November 20 10 am to 12 pm Register
or
Thursday November 26 10 am to 12 pm Register

Please let me know if you register for a session as we will need to set up for the conference call. Information on all seminars available in this series can be found on the NZ Cataloguers’ Wiki

New Resources

The following new resources have been added to the Catalogue:

The new EBL titles are mainly high-demand material. Titles are being added to the Catalogue and will be completed next week. You can find all titles in EBL by searching or using the Owned by Library sort option, or browse the Library Catalogue.

Coming soon: A Century of Social Science, which gives us access to Social Sciences Citation Index (on Web of Science) back to 1900. More information

Trials of four resources ended yesterday but we still have trials for:

  • DatAnalysis – to 23 October 2009
  • FinAnalysis – to 23 October 2009
  • Political Science Complete – to 28 October 2009
  • Hart Law Journals – to 1 January 2010

If you have had any comments for any of the resources on trial, please forward them to me so that they can be recorded on the Electronic Resources Trials page.

PLoS Usage Data

“As part of our ongoing article-level metrics program, we’re delighted to announce that all seven PLoS journals will now provide online usage data for published articles. With this addition, the suite of metrics on PLoS articles now includes measures of: online usage; citations from the scholarly literature; social bookmarks; blog coverage; and the Comments, Notes and ‘Star’ ratings that have been made on the article.” PLoS Blog

National Business Review

National Business Review has withdrawn the licence for current content from aggregator databases. This means that, effective from 28 August, the supply of the electronic version to Newztext and Factiva has been delayed by 4 weeks. We have taken up a subscription to NBR so that our users can now get current content directly from National Business Review.

However there are some things to be aware of:
• Login to NBR is automatic; you should see logged in as uniofcanterbury
• If you see an Online subscription link (above the search box) use the Login link
• After using the Login link the screen should display Welcome Canterbury University… and locked content will be viewable
Do not use the logout link
Do not use sign up for daily news emails

Logging out after use is not necessary as we have unlimited users and by logging out, everyone using NBR at that time is logged out. Similarly, signing up for news emails can overwrite the main account. If you wish to sign up for alerts please let me know so that an account can be set up. Alternatively, use RSS feeds or follow them on the MBA Guide.

This is not an ideal arrangement, but until NBR (or Sparks Interactive) can introduce better website control, there is no other option. Please let me know if there are any problems.

Book Review Index

Book Review Index has been added to our Gale databases for trial access until 30 September 2009. We have access to both BRI and BRI Online Plus.

Book Review Index Online (index only) is a comprehensive guide to book reviews that includes more than 5 million review citations from thousands of publications. This online product will answer librarians’ demand for a single access point to index data contained in numerous print volumes of Book Review Index.

Book Review Index Online Plus, like Book Review Index Online, includes more than 5 million review citations; it also includes more than 634,000 full-text reviews from InfoTrac OneFile and InfoTrac Expanded Academic, as well as full text via links to library holdings. Access to full-text reviews allows users to conduct research in numerous disciplines, including literature, history, education, psychology, and more.

Access is from the Electronic Resources Trials page or from the Gale databases menu. More information and title lists
