Go By Bike Day

As part of Bike Wise, tomorrow is Go By Bike Day:

Event: Go By Bike Day
Date: 18 February 7.00am
Location: Corner Madras and St Asaph Streets
What’s happening: For cyclists: free healthy scrumptious breakfast snacks, prizes and entertainment including stunt cycling and music.

You can still register for the Bike Wise Battle (see previous post). It would be terrific if we could get ourselves off the 8.6% mark and further up our organisation list. To do that we need more Library staff registered and logging their trips. Mechanical Engineering has 68.9% of their staff taking part, Geography has 53.8% and Chemistry and Civil Engineering both have 46.7%.

Take up the challenge, and see what we can do for the last 12 days – sign up now

SourceOECD

Our access to some products on SourceOECD has been lost. Users may find resources which they were able to access now have a frowning face rather than a smiley one. I have followed it up and hopefully full access will be restored asap.

In the meantime, the following are available via IngentaConnect:

Topomap Access

Topomap has recently been updated (see MapToaster for details) and you may get people reporting problems with access since they last used it. It should be fine in the Library but other parts of the Campus have had difficulty getting access.

Peter K offers a solution: “About the only thing I can suggest is that they try reinstalling W3 Launch software through the Add/Remove section of the Control Panel. That should let the Web link connect through to the database. If it does not, then I’d recommend them including on their desktops a shortcut that goes straight to the link [on the Campus installation notes page] as that does give quicker access.

The underlying problem is that Topomap is not web software, so requires the W3 Launch application if it is to be run from a web browser. This doesn’t work with all browsers, and often disappears every time a PC is replaced or reinstalled.”

Thanks Peter, and thanks to Margaret Adam for her persistance with installing the [wretched] update.

JSTOR pamphlet collections

JSTOR is currently adding primary sources of digitised materials from leading UK libraries. At the end of January, the first set of 8,200 pamphlets was made available and will be followed by regular releases of additional material. This content, ultimately more than 20,000 19th Century British pamphlets, is freely accessible until 30 June 2009.

Pamphlets come from: University of Newcastle, Durham University, University of Manchester, University College London, University of Liverpool, London School of Economics and Political Science, University of Bristol. More information

Also, terms on JSTOR have been changed to more accurately reflect the expanding types of content held:

  • Articles are now referred to as items, in most places
  • Journals are now called titles
  • Citation Locator was previously called Article Locator
  • The Article tab is now called the Items tab
  • Content (in About JSTOR) was previously Journals

Bike Wise Battle

Registrations for the Bike Wise Battle are now open. This year Bike Wise Battle runs for a month, starting Sunday 1st February. Several UC departments have signed up already; don’t let the Library lag behind! We need as many people as possible to ride during February so that we can beat Geography this year!

To register, click the Register link below the login box (or the Register tab) select University of Canterbury (Organisation) and Library (Department). After you’ve registered, remember to log your trips every day. As an incentive, there are daily spot prizes if you enter your previous days details by 2pm the next day.

If we get almost everybody registered and riding at least 2 km (anywhere, not just to work) we could win a sumptious morning tea for the whole Library. Learn more
Let’s all get cycling in February! Bike Wise Battle
